Need tablet advice

If you can't afford a proper tablet made by a reputable tablet manufacturer then you can't afford a tablet. Period.

Uh what? thats like saying that unless you can afford a Mercedes Benz, you should not be buying a car.

Not everyone has the budget for an iPad or Asus Transformer Pad Infinity. Or at least, maybe the OP has the budget for it but would rather spend it on other things, like a retirement annuity. Or are you going to advise that they blow all their cash as quickly as possible?

Heck, considering the OP is only buying this for a holiday, and might never use the thing again, it makes perfect sense to go cheap.

To buy a cheap tablet is to throw money away and there is no such thing as buying a tablet for a trip overseas only. A good tablet is a great device in so many ways that he will want to use it for years to come. Never ever good advice to buy a cheap tablet. Rather buy something decent and sell it if you find it of no use to you. Money wasted on a cheap tablet can never be recovered and when you discover the power of tablets you sit with a piece of crap.

+1

I had my fair share of Chinese tablets cause they were cheap. Now that I have rated the branded stuff you won't find me going that the route again.

OK, so I went out and signed a 2-year contract with Cell C and got the Huawei Ideos S7 Slim. Even if it isn't fantastic, it's only R100 a month. I mainly envisage using it to surf the web and get email while I'm on the move, the maps function might be handy when I'm away.

But.... there's no proper user manual with it, and I can't figure out how to get it to go online! The Cell C Simcard is inside. Help!

Is the sim activated? It should've connected by itself.
By default, the data is enabled.

Hmmm, took the Cell C SIM out and put my 8ta SIM in and went online immediately. The Cell C SIM was supposed to be activated already. Certainly I can do a balance enquiry on it.

But it still thinks I'm in Beijing, for some reason.

I must say, after just 20 minutes on this thing, I'm regretting it. Very unresponsive, very slow. I need a user manual!

Does the CPA allow me to go back and cancel the contract?

User manual is in the box and as a pdf on the tablet.
Menu, user manual.

Download opera mobile for a much improved web browsing, also has pinch to zoom.

Tell me exactly what problems you are having and il try to help

Big mistake......

Only tablets worth anything is
a Eee pad transformer + keyboard or
b iPad

Anything else is just crap, well unless you can get a nexus 7 but is not even out yet.

User manual is in the box

Well no, that's just a quickstart guide. doesn't give me the kind of details I need to get the most out of the device.

and as a pdf on the tablet. Menu, user manual.

I guess I'll have to copy it to a PC and print it out.

Are you saying pinch to zoom is a feature of the Opera Mobile browser, or a feature of the tablet?

Well, for one, I find the touch screen difficult to use. It seems unresponsive at times, and I often hit the wrong thing.

Then for a start: how does one move through input text in order to edit part of something typed, without deleting everything back to that point, ie does it have the equivalent of arrow keys on a keyboard, as opposed to the backspace key?

Also, how would one select several characters, the equivalent of click and drag on a PC, or using the shift key together with the trackball on a Blackberry.

Btw, have u ever used android before?

Nope, afraid not.

Thanks,
Ros.

Nope pinch to zoom is a OS feature.

For this it depends on the keyboard, personally I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beansoft.keyboardplus on my tablet to cater for this but I think its a paid for app? Installed it so long ago that I forgot if it is. You can also try other keyboards that will cater for it, or maybe yours already does, do not know. For example Touchpal has an edit mode but not thumb layout but its free or maybe other people can give better suggestions?

Also, how would one select several characters, the equivalent of click and drag on a PC, or using the shift key together with the trackball on a Blackberry.

To select text you can long press on it till a select box appear, then you can move em to what you wanna do. Or again get a keyboard that supports it, see example below of Touchpal's edit mode.

Android is not as restrictive as iPad and apps are far easier to buy.

iPad need loads of tinkering to fool it into thinking you are American in order to get access to truly useful apps... South African app store is up to no good...

I use an iPad myself and it is a wonderful piece of hardware, but as I said be warned it is restrictive. Android tablets are easier to use as usb drives for instance and can play virtually any file without hassle... iPads need a lot of begging...

Lots of tinkering? Well if that's what you call entering an American address in the android world then I guess it is tinkering. iTunes is a bit of a pain but that's not needed to load photos, videos or even files if you have the right apps.
