Need tablet advice

Android is not as restrictive as iPad and apps are far easier to buy.

iPad need loads of tinkering to fool it into thinking you are American in order to get access to truly useful apps... South African app store is up to no good...

I use an iPad myself and it is a wonderful piece of hardware, but as I said be warned it is restrictive. Android tablets are easier to use as usb drives for instance and can play virtually any file without hassle... iPads need a lot of begging...
Or a simple change of country from SA to Kenya to get virtually the same apps as the US.

I agree, if you want to use a tablet as a USB dongle then the iPad isn't the simplest method (using a R50 usb dongle is :))

Agree. I constantly worry about how I'm going to recover that three minutes I spent on the issue two years ago...

You neee Opera Mobile not the mini. Search in the app store for it

agreed, opera mobile not mini. Dont worry, ur tablet has multitouch, 4 points

any other problems you having?

My top apps are opera, angry birds, raging thunder, alarmdroid, adobe pdf, swiftkey tablet, apps2SD, astro file manager, chess, mybroadband, whatsapp, plant wars, oh and i changed the voice to ivona kendra.

Also if u understand basic programming or are very logical, tasker is AWESOME.

Any app available that allows you to open a flash drive on your tablet with an otg connector?

Depends on what you mean by "open". ES File Explorer can access the drive if your OS has picked it up.

OK, I guess it will just take time to learn all the tricks. I downloaded Opera Mobile and "Super Keyboard" which at least has arrow keys. I don't really want to pay for something that I'm not sure has the functionality I want.

any other problems you having?

1. I would like very much to be able to do the equivalent of Shift+Ctrl+left or right arrow key, to select a word at a time, as I do on my PC keyboard. I'm not a big mouse user, but tend to do as much as possible by using the keyboard, so I'm very much into using arrow keys together with Control and Shift for moving and selecting quickly and accurately. Boy am I missing the "Delete" key! I'm sure there must be a way of getting it, just have to learn.

2. Is there an equivalent of the Windows XP Alt+Tab to scroll through open applications?

3. I can't get my gmail. When I click on the GMail icon, it just says "Waiting for sync". I have my gmail account in there (don't know how it got in there, perhaps when I logged on to download apps?), but I can't see how to get into its settings and it just sits on "Waiting for sync". I've tried using two different Sims, plus a Wifi connection. I'm definitely connected to the Internet.

Closest I've gotten to programming is some fairly sophisticated Macro writing in WordPerfect5.1 for DOS. I am very logical... what is tasker?

I guess I just need time to sit with the thing. I'll get to it....

1. Selecting words.... Hmmm not that i know off, if the text is from a document, i use adobe pdf reader to copy it. Its the easiest. If the text is from a text entry box, touch where u wana start then long press for options.

2. Cycle open apps. There are a few task managers out there and maybe one has shortcut keys, i am happy with the default one, like 2 windows on top right corner, bottom right is ur application list key. O and holding the home key opens ur 8 recent appz.

3. Go t play store n try to update gmail. Or go to settings, accounts n disable auto sync

4. Tasker is like an app that causes things to happen under certain situations. Like, if mapz app open, enable gps. Or if i leave home, switch off wifi, or at 8am switch to silent till 5 pm. The list is endless, google for more

I've updated gmail and taken off auto-sync. When I open gmail, it says "Press Menu > Refresh to sync mail once". I do this, and it's still Waiting for sync. I'm definitely online.

Another thing... I thought I set up my start page under Opera Mobile, but it doesn't seem to have been stored. Now, when I click on 'Start Page' on the Opera dropdown menu, top-left, nothing happens.

Big mistake......

Only tablets worth anything is
a Eee pad transformer + keyboard or
b iPad

Anything else is just crap, well unless you can get a nexus 7 but is not even out yet.
Very poor advice, because there are tablets out there that does a very good job, at a fraction of the price. I had the HTC Flyer, and it was great when it came to me signing documents etc. I also had the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and will more than likely go for the Galaxy Note 10.1. Its not just about iPad, and while its a great device, you cant make people believe its the only tablet worth buying into. It really comes down to what people want, and them making up their own mind. I cringe when i see consultants in a cellphone store, dictate to people what they want people to buy, rather than the person buying it.

So I'm back from my trip and wanted to report that I'm quite happy with the Huawei 7" tablet that I got from Cell C. Sure, it's cheap, and you can tell... sometimes it doesn't act quite as it should and there are a few little irritants, but it did what I needed. Perhaps the battery life isn't as good as I'd have liked - I had to be careful some days how much I used it in case it ran out.

I must say, I was damn impressed by the navigation app - I effectively have a GPS now. Absolutely saved my life driving in the UK. And having Google maps on tap meant I no longer had to schlep a London A to Z around with me.

A 10" tablet would definitely have been too big.

So all in all, quite happy for R100 per month.
