Need to Upgrade my son's gaming computer

I’m in Honeydew. Don’t mind second hand but worried about ex mining gpu’s. (Also have no experience in carbonite and wouldn’t know how to start there). Budget was R6000, but with monitor, hardrive and GPU looking at over R8k which may now get vetoed by the rest of family contributors.

Hmmm close by. Let's have a look at Carb, I can help you buy from there, I'm known and trusted there. In terms of necessities - GPU, HDD. Then i'd say RAM, then SSD. The monitor SHOULD be upgraded, but rather upgrade the PC and keep the *** monitor, than don't upgrade at all.

Urban is cool :) Let him be your guide to Carb. You could save a pretty penny on there.

Hmmm a thought has occurred to me. Do you know what power supply he has? Need to know the wattage minimally, brand and model would be ideal.
 
Your spec is missing power supply rating. Check it out before adding any graphics card.

I agree, it must be part of agreement. Otherwise your kid will earn extra pocket money and family wiil pay electricity bill.

Well it's 450W and has 1 x 6 pin connector (which is what the Zotac 1060 6GB above requires) so could work.

From the calculations I did, that system should require roughly 378W with the 1060 6GB and an additional HDD
 
Someone should maybe mention that if he buys a SSD and uses it as the boot drive, windows will have to be re-installed... :p

I wil throw in a 2 x molex to 8 pin converter in for you as well. I am just waiting for my supplier to let me know if it has the blower fan like the photo or if it has two separate fans.
 
Hi. I'm back and after all your guys previous advice, I am two thirds done with my son's upgrade. Just some monitor advice now please......

Budget not big at about R2800. I have gone through some other threads and seen rather heated discussion on low budget IPS versus VA monitors (I gather i mustn't even look at TN panes).

It was previously mentioned that I could look at a 25" ultra wide for LG similar to this https://www.wootware.co.za/lg-25um58-p-25-ultrawide-full-hd-ips-led-lit-monitor.html

But am concerned as to whether the ultra wide 25" is a better option then a more traditional 24" https://www.wootware.co.za/dell-p24...descreen-ips-led-backlit-desktop-monitor.html . I see some games don't support 2560x1080
and I am also wondering if the narrower vertical of the ultra-wide will cause problems, as he plays some strategy games where the menus might be an issue (my uninformed guess!)?

Below are some of the games he is currently active with on steam:

Skyrim
Warband (Mount & Blade)
Heart of Iron
Total War Attila
Tom Clancy Wildlands (not much until new GPU installed).
 
I have that LG monitor, and while most modern games work, not all do, and you will definitely run into issue with Skyrim. You can, of course, run in 1080p, but will have black bars on either side of the screen.

Ultimately, for gaming, I don't recommend it. It's really amazing when it works, but very frustrating when it does not.

Many games can be fixed. Skyrim just needs a ini file edit if I'm not mistaken.

I found that Creation Engine games were particularly troublesome. Many games can be fixed, indeed, but it's simply not worth the hassle, in my experience, as all it takes is one broken game that you really want to play, to make the monitor a really annoying purchase.

That being said, it's an awesome monitor, and I use it in conjunction with my gaming monitor.
 
Wouldn't a PS4/X box be better. You can buy two at that price. Games won't be as brilliant as on PC but if they are just going to be playing games on the PC instead of using it for mining/programming/school projects/other. Than getting a game console is better IMO.
