Im looking for some advice on WiMax. Since telkom no longer have lines in my area I am forced to find alternatives.

Basicly my options are Vodacom WiMax, iBurst Wimax(both with decent signal) and Neotel (who have installed in my area but do not yet offer service.)

I live in the Fourways (Broadacres) area, the line will mainly be used for international gaming.

So my questions are:

1. Which WiMax has better speed/stability, iBurst or Vodacom?
2. Does Vodacom resell iBurst WiMax or is it their own infrastructure.
3. Should I rather be waiting for NeoTel?
4. Are there other affordable services available?

Ive contacted so many place, all keen to take my money. Ive experiances **** service from all of them. Not being able to get anyone out to test my signal, or they want me to apply for the service before they test the signal.

I've also been looking at Wimax recently. After the heavy rains in Gauteng these past few weeks, my ADSL line's stability has once again gone to &^#$. I've had to downgrade my line speed from 4096 Kb/s to 1024 Kb/s just to stop it from loosing sync once every 10 minutes.

Anyway, I don't have an answer to all of your questions, but I did contact Vodacom about their Wimax offering a few days ago and this is the response I got:

Dear Sarel,

Thank you for your e-mail communication to Vodacom.

Kindly note that we have been notified that WiMax has been made available to individuals as from today. Please view our Coverage Map and advise us whether you have coverage at your location. Alternatively, supply your exact address so that we may check this for you before addressing any application process.

Visit http://www.vodamap.net/3g/ for the map.

Should you have any further queries, please contact us via e-mail at customercare (at) vodacom (dot) co (dot) za.

I have yet to receive any info wrt pricing, whether it's possible to use your own ISP, cap sizes (if applicable), connection speeds etc.

I actually contacted Vodacom about their WiMax and talked them into coming to test my signal strength (im in a tiny valley). They got back to me the following day saying they will dispatch a technition to come test and that he would contact me soon.

Low and behold its been just over a week and no response.

Ive tried contacting Screamer using their website, calling and also leaving a messege and they still havent gotten back to me. Also been about a week.

I contacted iBurst who say they will only come test my signal after I have filled out all of the forms applying for a service. Not to mention how bloated their prices are.

It amazes me how we actually manage to do business in this country.

Why not get Telkom Wimax? They are the cheapest and you can use any ISP.

Hi Corpus

Have you had a response from Screamer. If not, I have PM'd you and will undertake to have you installed within 24 hours of receiving your PM to make up.

Regards
