Neighbours angry about slaughter

And outside of that realm?

Remember, it's not your comments that I have issue with. Saying ritual sacrifice is wrong and pointless is fine.

Saying that the culture that does it is more barbaric because they do it is a statement that lacks perspective.

I don't want to offer examples because then the debate will get specific to the example.

It should be enough to look at senseless and cruel effects on wildlife across all practices and products of each culture.

Like I said, offer examples or your position will remain nebulous.

No I'm not against slaughtering an animal regardless of the circumstances. I also didn't say I'm against cruelty. I said I'm against needless cruelty.

I'm saying if you have to kill something try to do it in a manner that causes the least amount of pain taking into account why you're killing it in the first place.

For example if you're going to do research into a virus or something it is safe to assume the animal purposely infected is going to suffer. I also understand why it needs to suffer. However don't draw it out any longer than you need to.

We don't need to eat meat. The millions of healthy vegetarians out there are proof of that. Meat tastes good, that's about it. So if you can justify the suffering animals go through so that you can have some bacon or a juicy steak, that's fine. But don't criticise a ritual slaughter then.

Medical research is a trickier issue.

The thought of a juicy stake made my stomach growl :D Sorry :p

Those animals are going to be slaughtered whether some individual chooses to eat meat or not. I don't have a problem with killing animals. At no point did I say that. So I don't need to justify anything. Just make sure that you kill them in a manner that doesn't cause needless pain. Set up a system that monitors it to make sure they are killed in ways that cause the least amount of pain. If they are still experiencing needlessly high amounts of pain then reform the system.

You said needless cruelty. Considering that we don't need to eat meat, then it follows that the raising and slaughtering of billions of animals each year is needlessly cruel, no?

Needless cruelty when killing animals. I accept that humanity kills animals and I don't have a problem with it (this is the second time I'm saying this now). I have a problem with drawing out the suffering of an animal any more than it needs to be drawn out. That is all I am saying. It is all I have ever said.

So do you buy all your meat from free-range organic small scale farmers who kill their livestock on site?

No I trust in my government to set up the appropriate systems to ensure that needless cruelty isn't permitted. If needless cruelty is permitted then there is a problem with the regulation of the industry and it needs to be reformed. It isn't my responsibility to research where everything I purchase comes from.

Ok, so you have a problem with needless cruelty, but not when it's for food, and not if you actually have to do anything about it yourself. So you kinda have a problem with needless cruelty, but not really. It's a lot more needless and cruel when the black people down the road do it.

I get it.

I'm saying everyone that kills it needs to ensure it doesn't suffer needlessly.

This should have nothing to do with who consumes it. It should be the responsibility of those who understand the process. Similarly I wouldn't give the choice as to how to conduct viral research in South Africa to the public.

Do we know how our antibiotics are produced and researched? No. We trust in the regulatory systems manned by people with expertise in the field to determine that they are produced in an ethical manner. So it should be the same with meat. In fact I'd be amazed if there wasn't a regulatory system in place for meat. To tell the average person to go and understand it is not a practical answer.
