U.S. Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man ever to walk on the moon, has died at age 82, NBC News reports.

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. He radioed back to Earth the historic news: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

He spent nearly three hours walking on the moon with fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.

The story is developing and updates will soon follow.

Update at 3:29 p.m. ET: Armstrong, who lived in the Cincinnati area, recently had heart surgery, NBC reports. Surgeons bypassed four blockages in his coronary arteries. His wife had said his spirits were high and that doctors expected no problems with his recovery.

May he rest in peace.

One clever dude. Must have been terrifying to step out onto the moon in 1969, but he did it and is immortal

A true hero of space exploration gone. Sad

Pity they took away his medals right before he passed on...

Bah! These news correspondents and their "One giant loss for mankind" catch phrases  He was a modest man and would probably have hated that saying :/
