Neotel consumer tariffs revealed

I just called Neotel to confirm about 24 months contract. Yes, it is true.

Like Cara, I'll be pulling out the Champagne and having a toast to NeoTel. Especially since this is likely only the beginning and there have been sound, logical reasons why their offering is structured the way it is. Without another undersea cable it's impractical for them to provide us all with uncapped anything but already they've come in with a higher offering than other people.

I would have thought that since the majority of people here joined the site because of the way Telkom has been pillaging our country unchecked there'd be a little more happiness.

I can agree with this though I'm interested more in any ripple effect now that the contract has been confirmed.

I'm interested in the phone itself - these days you need to ask what sort of battery life is guaranteed in case of an emergency during an all day outage? We know telkom lines will always work even if there is no power.

Is an alarm system going to be able to function normally? What about faxing?

That is a good question, and is it still the case that you can only make a call or be on the internet or have that issue been addressed?

The reason we were/are all complaining is that we have a problem with telkom(*spit*) ... and the reason was price,services,etc. which we hoped neotel would help address ... which they did not .... so just having another player in the market is pointless if they are not offering something better .... and competition means that they would actually be competing, but from this offer ... seems like they are only trying to stick to the same rules .... which is more like colluding than competition

maybe they have better options coming down the line ... but for now ... its not an option that looks good to me!!

Exactly. We all expected so much.

Don't expect us to jump up and down when almost none of the issues we have with Telkom have been addressed.
 
I do believe that they will bring out an entry level option(s) out in the near future. Slower speed/Lower cap - lower price

For now 2 points:
1. How much do you currently pay for 10G - about the same and with neotel you get everything included!
2. There is a Telkom alternative

This was what we wanted for years. Now it hear. Lets celebrate! Enjoy this moment. You have a choice. nobody is forcing you telkom using telkom anymore!

Interesting logic there.

We don't want lower and slower, we want faster, more cap and cheaper.
 
I think Neotel have really messed up in terms of opening "specials" , It's basic marketing strategy to offer really good deals when a company launches in order to attract as many customers as possible.
Even if it means they run at a loss for a couple of years , it's not like Government won't bail them out with their large stake in Neotel. ie Eskom and Transet

Yip. That is kinda what some of us where expecting I am sure. Alas, it seems we were way out.

Notwithstanding the obvious shortfalls, speed, latency, lack of ethernet, either voice or data, not both, etc.... I think it is good start for Neotel. At R60/gb with no additional costs this is by far the cheapest 10Gb option in the market. 7c/MB after cap is extremely fair.

Compared to other wireless options and low-end ADSL use it certainly trumps them all on price.

Even though I couldn't use the service myself, I welcome the competitive pricing impact this will eventually have on the SA broadband market.

I hear what you are saying, but with those myriad problems that I have emboldened, it really is not something to get excited about for many.

Like you said, i can't use the service either.

The price is not the only thing that is important. Just wait on the phone for a couple of hours to Telkom to see what I mean or have your business internet down for a week because of a Telkom fault. These cost far more then just the price.

So you would switch to Neotel just because of that? Just trying to understand what you are getting at here...
 
As a few have said it is absolutely great that yet another wireless operator has entered the market. Measured against other wireless operators, there pricing really stands out for a wireless service. However when I look at the advantages DSL has over the NeoTel offering, there is no comparison for me. It is like comparing apples with pears.

I always hoped that NeoTel's offerings would in fact compete with Telkom, thereby eventually bringing the price down. I don't see this happening with this offer or any other offer they are currently able to bring to the consumer. I mean really, in this day and age to still have to only be able to either surf the net OR take a call...no sorry that is going backwards, not forward.
