Neotel gets flak

While everyone knows I am the first to complain....

I was commenting to the wife on Saturday at how well the roads have been repaired.
One can barely even see where the "trenches" were dug on Republic Rd - William Nichol was also quite well fixed from what I could see (road was quite flooded due to a burst pipe somewhere).

Other telecommunications companies including Telkom, Vodacom and Dark Fibre Africa have also embarked on digging trenches to lay cables.

I was under the impression that only Telkom and Neotel had the authority to lay cables...

I tend to agree, but Sloane Street has been left in a bit of a bumpy mess - going uphill in the left hand lane towards William Nicol, so there are exceptions to what appears to be the rule.

As for the potholes the article mentions - there are loads of potholes on the roads - this is a fact, and while I'm sure a few potholes might have been a consequence of laying fibre optic cabling, the vast majority of potholes were there prior to laying fibre optic cabling, which IMO means that the JRA has not been doing its job properly for a very long time. I also remember something which I think was mentioned on Carte Blanche a while back - to do with the City of Joburg's rate hike, that roads in Soweto are generally in better shape than in most suburbs around Joburg, which is great for Soweto, but not great everywhere else.

Yeah - fer sure on the exceptions. No doubt some areas are worse.
Also, there is no way (for me at least) to know which company dug where.

As to the "regular" potholes, sigh. All along republic road, there are potholes, alongside the newly repaired trenches.

They fixed that so quick, i dont see what you complaining about.

Which part of Republic Road? - just wondering bcos I occasionally use the stretch of Republic Road that T-junctions into William Nicol - not many potholes there IIRC, but would be nice to know where the new potholes are in case I have to drive out that way sometime soon & can then make a detour around them - my car's suspension has had enough pummelling from the stretch of Main Road closest to Crowthorne twice a business day to & from Centurion...:(

They did a *** job of fixing it, I avoid the left hand lane going uphill on my way home.

Under correction...
Just before Main Rd (The one nearest William Nichol, not the one near the Waterfront), going towards WN, as you go around that hectic bend.

My directions are great, huh?

must've been driving the car with fat tires and didnt feel the bump much, just when i thought after the road works are complete on Main Rd. i can start driving the with the other cars to Randburg :(

Rule of thumb...

If there are no "Neotel" signs, it's NOT Neotel! LOTS of operators are laying fibre at the moment, including Vodacom, MTN etc...

Don't think if the fibre is orange that it means anything either. Anyone can purchase orange fibre from the manufacturer.

Added to that is the fact that Neotel have COMPLETED their metro fibre roll-out, so the only Neotel work taking place now is on the pavement between the metro rings and the actual customer premises.

I should know as I work there...

Whatever happened to CaptainWiFi - I'm sure he could add something regarding 'digging up the road' for cables...:D

I don't care about the state of the roads if it means we getting a better infrastructure :P
I've learned to dodge potholes like a pro.. I've had a few burst tires and stuff from hitting pavements though.. lol :P but that was long ago when i was young and reckless, I'm pretty sure everyone in JHB not living in Soweto has become a really good pothole dodger.. The trenches on the side of the road aren't affecting anyone!!! Ok maybe for a while I had to take some corners slowly because I didn't wanna mess up my car, but that's fine now and Everything is going forward...
