so, we have an office in fairlands (behind that big wesbank building) that we need to get a reliable internet connection installed in.

the current setup is a two 4Mb DSL lines that have been bonded. the problem is that the exchange is oversubscribed and the DSL is as reliable as a Greek bank.

Neotel and Telkom do not have any fibre that is 'economical' to pull to the office. WiMax isn't an option and 3G is too expensive.

Neotel recommended that we install a microwave link.

My question is this: has anyone had any experience with neotel's microwave solutions, and if so was it a good one?

We are installing a microwave link in Illovo from Clearaccess and Neotel couldn't install a fibre line quickly enough. The pricing is similar as the fibre costs. Roughly about R 10k for 10 Mbps. It works from 2 Mbps upwards.

Microwave from Neotel is extremely reliable, speeds are symmetric, and high site capacity is reserved for your connection, so contention/congestion should never be an issue.

Do these microwave links run on licensed spectrum ?

I was going to put a microwave from Neotel. It took three weeks for site survey. And i didn't have LOS. Bad luck.

As neotel was my first choice, i manage to get a dedicated wifi link from EOH network solutions. Excelent connection. Similar pricing too (except a higher installation cost).

Vodacom also offered a microwave, but too expensive (and terrible service too).

I believe Neotel use VectorStar and a few other vendors for MW (PTP/PTMP) and WiMAX equipment.

We are awaiting our installation, 15mps offering, very cost effective when compared to the other players..... just hope it works!

Whats the price on that 15 mbps microwave offering

It's the same as fibre I believe. For 15Mbps I reckon you'd need a PTP service. Either way, you're looking at around R11,000 per month and an installation fee of around R1,500.

Anyone here got their 15mbps (or even 10mbps) Microwave links up? Interested in what the performance is like.

Hi Pavan... Yes, anything above 5Mbps will be a point to point link.

Whats the latency like on microwave?
Latency is very similar to fibre services, but will be affected slightly by whether you're on a point-to-point or point-to-multipoint link. We have p2p microwave at our offices and I ping to mweb (13 hops) at 25ms.

We have 10Mbps and sitting in our office you would not be able to tell the difference between our service and a client on fibre's service.

Please PM me if you have not found a solution yet.
