I got Neotel Prem unlimited yesterday and I have done some tests here are my results.

On www.speedtest.net:

Download: 1118kb/s
Upload: 85 kb/s
Ping: 394ms

Speed test on games.saix.net:

I get only 318kb/s on this speed test

Downloading torrents:

I get an average of 52kB/s download speeds while downloading

Gamespot downloader:

I get upto 160kB/s downloads on this very fast downloads

Streaming Videos:

On Youtube: seems ok thou you still need to buffer for like 10secs before watching
on Gamespot: this is wierd some video's stream at 90kB/s and play perfectly other stream at an average of 52kB/s and these you need to buffer.

Gaming on Neotel:

I used trackmania nations forever to do this test it's easiest to test servers from all over. Best ping I found was 800ms from a German server while I was getting 2000ms from the saix servers...

General use:

One thing that this connection seems to do while you using it is that the connection is somehow segmented where you can't seem to use the whole connection on any one program. I monitor my connection using Du Meter last night I got my connection upto 187kB/s this was while I was downloading 5 torrents, downloading the Diablo 3 Preview vid from Gamespot, reading a HD comic from Marvel.com and downloading a free mmorpg using firefox's downloader. Even with all this going on browsing was still nice and fast...
The main problem seems to be that you don't have a constant speed on anything speeds keep rising and dropping

Assuming you have a windows machine, can you confirm that you did those tests with QoS Packet Schedular Service disabled/(not installed) on you dial-up connection to Neotel?

Thanks a lot for posting your experience thus far. :)

My only concern would be that ridiculously high latency for online gaming. :(

the tests where on a windows machine I haven't fiddled with the settings on anything just installed software and connected. Where do I check the setting for the QoS Packet Schedular?

Yes online gaming is a major concern I don't recommend neotel for online gaming...

If you see the network connection icon in your task bar after a successfull connection to Neotel.

right click -> Status
click on Properties button inside the ... Connection Status Window.

You should then see the list of services/protocols/clients attached to your connection. If you do see it it listed, then it is installed, if it has a tick mark in, it means it is enabled. To disable it, just remove the tick mark and reconnect to Neotel, and ran the test, you may see an improvement in download speeds for a specific connection but anything else may be utterly slow. I would only recommend to disable it for speed tests to a single site/host.

The QoS packet Schedular helps when you have multiple connections open.

I would suggest to enable it after the speed connection.

My problem is that with under 1000 customers, contention is pretty much non-existent.
What will these speeds be like in a year?

Thanks Chubster for the reply QoS was not enabled for the tests. QoS isn't even installed on this connection... I have tried to add it but it isn't showing up in the list as a service.

Once the alternative international connection is ready, and Neotel's own network is better established and Telkom has finished the local loop unbundling it should seem better ;)

They are registered to have at least in the range of ~ 1'040'000 public IPs, which mean they could contribute at least 1 million users to the broadband list in ZA.

Oh Well, we can only wait for Neotel to establish better relations with other national networks to improve local web site browsing. :D

My personal opinion of the Neotel Lite unlimited is that it should be priced at ~ R250. Jumping to 2.4MBps (Prime unlimited) should then make sense to pay R999.

Assuming it was the correct connection you selected :p It is good to know to know what the "real" speeds are. It did sound like They did Qaulity of Service on your connection, perhaps from Neotel's side? Who knows...

Thanks for the information ico.

My friend got the Neotel Lite unlimited package last week it's a pile of doggy s*** max it's a little better then isdn just with much higher pings on everything... peaks at 19kB/s downloads and averages at 12kB/s it's really a hopeless package. I agree they should price that pack alot lower because compared to the prime account it's really no contest...

Hey I am on Neotel lite, and to be honeset with you their service is a pile of s!!! it's worst than dial-up,takes over 10minutes for a website to load. I am officially cancelling this service with immediate effect, it's like living in the stone age.

Got more done with My DSL at a less price

Why would you sign up for their dial-up replacement that you know is 156kbps when you had DSL? And then complain about slow speeds.. It can't be that fast.

Telkom screwed me over saying I've to pay R6 grand, then that was the last straw, after I said I want to leave they sorted out my account......

And I do not like a company like telkom taking me to the ITC, when it was their fault..

Suffice to say I had a major scrap with Telkom over an simple upgrade from 512 - 4mb. When I instructed them to cancel all services and remove all their wires and poles from my premises so I can go to Neotel then they sorted my account and gave me credits. Now I LOVE TElkom will stay for a while till REAL competition arrives, although I doubt that that will ever happen in South Africa in our lifetimes.

I wish people would stop making unfounded comments like that.
The NCA and NCR prevent companies from abusing credit bureaux to extort payments from clients.
If you have been extorted, you can open a case with the Regulator. We deal with them often and they are very pro-consumer.

How many of these extortionists are in jail?

The only way to stop these extortion practices would be to have a big shot CEO in jail for a year or so.

They don't extort, directly, they extort employees with "targets" to extort ordinary people.
