Neotel: Services within weeks

Ok just talked to the spokesperson of Neotel.

And all they could tell me was.
Cape Town, Durban and jo-burg will see the roll out of Neotel products by the end of September. Prices list to be announced just before the roll out.

Broadband packages: Not alot from them, however they did say that they will be using CDMA 2000 (no idea what that is) Cap? Again it looks like the SA consumer is going to get prison treatment. All they told me was that they would be offering some uncapped and others with cap.

Places like PE, where i live, can expect Neotel by the end of the year.

I wish....

for a Neotel CDMA black box where I can plug my folk's cordless phone into, and an ethernet plug where I can connect their PC to.

Speed is not an issue in this case, just the ability to download the photo's of the latest antics of their grand children :)

Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town will be the first cities to receive services from Neotel. This will happen before the end of September. The guy said within two to three weeks. Pretoria should get service from Neotel about two weeks after that (early Ocktober). He did not mention what eares exactly but he asked where in Pretoria I live and he said I should be able to get service from early Ocktober as the services for Pretoria will be rolled out beginning October.

Unfortunately I cannot remember the rest he said as he phoned me and did not send an email. There were a few other things that he mentioned but just the fact that he phoned me got me all exited.

One thing that got me thinking though is that he phoned using a cell phone (MTN). I would've atleast thought that they would be able to use their own infrastructure. Don't know if this is good or bad but just a thought.

I was contacted by Sidwell.

Bwana, also living in PE, decides to consult his magic 8-Ball . . . "Outlook Good" . . . sweet.

Are you on MTN? They could be using a Premicell and LCR :)

I think that Neotel's phone network is probably in the same boat as most of the other VoIP providers: Still bogged down in considerable ICASA red tape and Telkom's hostile interconnection negotiations. And lets be realistic - the demand for competition in the Internet services space is probably much higher than the demand for alternative POTS networks at this stage.

Good day Itai Etzman

Neotel plans to introduce a variety of voice and data services (including high-speed-Internet and true broadband access services) for individual consumers and SMMEs in South Africa. Neotel will focus on converged wireless services, offering voice and internet access over a single device, thereby bringing convenience and simplicity in telecoms services.

The converged high-speed internet access and voice services are currently being piloted by Neotel, and will be commercially available in select areas of the major metros immediately following the completion of the pilot.

Neotel is also working towards rolling out True Broadband services over various technologies, including wireless technologies such as WiMAX and wireline technologies such as DSL and fibre. Broadband services are targeted for introduction around the end of the 2007.

Information pertaining to pricing of the various products for residential and SMME customers will be made available closer to the launch of commercial services, which will follow the completion of our pilot services in September 07.

Why release the prices just before the launch? Why not wait until a few months after the launch. Just to scope out the market first. Just in case they get it wrong...

The way it seems now is that we soon will have a choice between Telkom sluggish service or Neotel never-never sluggish service.

But then: Neotel seems to have trumped Telkom by actually having the guts to place an official post on the largest south african consumer forum.

Looking forward to Neotel to prove they can actually deliver a 1st class service.

If Neotel is able to deliver decent cost effective service where I need it, I am prepared to support Neotel.

But at present the delay upon delay upon delay scenario is making me very sceptical. It would be of no use to jump from one rusty ship to another

Good day Itai Etzman
