This is the reality of the market.

I'd like to do a sum for you. At the moment MTN offers 2gig for R389.

If Neotel were to offer 4 gigs at R350 they would be offering savings of over 50%. (That is including the cost of a device.) For a new player in the market to do something like this would be absolutely astounding and rewrite the rules of wireless internet provision in South Africa.

This is why a lot of people are asking Neotel for something like this.
 
My 2c worth !

In a competitive market , one can get Unlimited Access for R499

In South Africa if you lucky you will get 5 GIGs for R499 max Download speed 512kbps

But Take in Account that Neotel is a new Operator that is just setting up shop and they are the cheapest at the moment.

We have come a long way from the days of R45 megabyte.

Hopefully NeoTel will make a difference to the market and claim enough market share to make the other OPerators Bottom line look weak.

Pressure is the only thing that drives prices down.

If I sold wireless modems at R50 000 a piece and people bought it. I would never reduce my price. However if a competitor sold the same thing for R45 000. Then it's obvious I would have to consider offering it at R44 000.

If lets say for arguments sake, we have at least 2 more Cash rich OPerators investing in The South African market like ZAIN or RELIANCE then we could be in for a lovely treat.

South Africa can Sustain 10 OPerators in the Data Market. With each operator having 2 million Subscribers.

Our Government seeks to make a few ANC comrades rich with Licences and BEE shareholding. Nigeria has All the big names there. They Issued these lucrative licences to all the Big Names for a reason.

1. Bring in Foreign Direct Investment.
2. Create thousands of jobs for the people of the Country.
3. Invest in and create widespread Infrastructure.
4. Develop a world class ICT superhighway for the people.
5. Obtain large sums of TAX money from these Telecom Giants
6. Create a very competitive Telecoms Environment.
7. Lower the price of Access & Services to the people.
8. Educate the nation through the Internet.

We surely can do it here too. If we deliberately allocate Licences to companies like ZAIN & RELIANCE we create a very Competitive environment for the PEople. These Companies Operate in Very Competitive Markets and KNow how to pinch Customers and make their business case Work.

Neotel sucks.... was going to go with them but they are "just another Telkom" dressed in orange... and that they cant even get right, because they stole that from iBurst.

Agreed. If not even less. People, you need to take a look outside SA borders and developing countries. Look at India for example and how their ITC sector has flourished.

R1K for uncapped is just ludicrous. SA has got the perfect opportunity to become one of the international leaders in this field, but a selected few alway has to F.I.U for everyone. You might as well call us America.
 
We are not winning here, we seem to be going backward. I thought the fight was to achieve higher speeds, higher caps, not lower speeds and lower caps. there are too many people who see broadband as a faster way to collect email and large caps as the domain of the downloader. I wish they would stop being so bloody naive. Large caps are not just for downloading illegal torrents and music. StumbleUpon video has opened my eyes to a whole world of video content I didn't know exitsed. Just last night I used 400MB watching videos that I stumbled upon, some educational, some not so much. The point is, while the rest of the world is moving toward richer, fuller online experiences we're busy begging for a cheaper ticket just so we can ride on the baggage cart. We deserve a 1st class ride for the prices we are paying.

People are going for 3G yet it has smaller caps, and higher latency's, and no free 30GB local

Why is this???

Pre-paid.

Rather have pre-paid and lots of users, instead of contract with almost no users.

People just don't like to sign a contract saying they will fork out R1000 every month, especially if it's just for internet. however, if you make it prepaid people will go for it. they just don't wanna be FORCED to do it.

And they wonder why people aren't flocking over.......eish. what a disappointment.

Yes but you see beancounters and suits don't like prepaid.
It makes them too likely to suffer the consequences of the quality of their service.

So now we are back with the Telkom abusers argument ... At least when Telkom floated it things like youtube, and online video feeds in every news source, weren't every day items .

So I ask a simple question: HOw many of you have set up systems and a network that does prepaid in a matter of 6months that performs flawlessly?

6 months? How many years is it since the SNO was mooted. Neotel has had since then to get its policy ducks in a row. In answer to the first part, very few of us have applied for a SNO license. Those who obtained a SNO would be expected to be experts in their field. Did I not read somewhere that Neotel has a participant who set up a large network somewhere :confused: :rolleyes: If this partner learned nothing from their participation in that exercise then they should get out of the business.

If Neotel were to offer prepaid I would get their service right now. You should also be able to buy their modem/router for cash. Then if you don't like them and want to move you should be able to sell the modem to somebody else. I know they lock their devices to an account but you should be able to go into a Neotel store and get the device moved to another account for R50 or so.

I also reckon that one of the successes of 3G in South Africa is that you can basically buy a 3G modem from anyone and then use it on their network. Don't like 3G? Want a new modem that can support higher speeds? Just sell your old modem to somebody else and use that cash to help you pay for the new modem. And the cell phone operators now have 2 customers...

A far better solution for prepaid is allow short term rental for the device, so long as the only device is a proprietary item available only from Neotel.

Alternatively a guaranteed buyback price must be offered.
 
Prepaid voice and data will be available this year, and implementation is underway. As has been pointed out, prepaid is a sizeable and complex investment, but we are well aware of the level of interest.
