NEPAD Favours Open Access For EASSY Project

Well that is good news. Hope it doesn't dissillusion investors for future cables though

Under NEPAD's open access arrangement, the venture will be owned by
shareholders who comprise of licenced international gateway operators, non-operator entities nominated by African states and interested international operators outside the region.

hmmm.... this statement is saying alot of what NEPAD thinks about the telecoms operators on it's own continent. :-D

SA is no exception! No wonder they want non-operator and outside operator s to own the cable. Speaks volumes.

You know, if the SA goverment was really smart they would lay SA's own cable and sell bandwidth at cost to anyone who wanted it. The direct and indirect economic benefits of it would outweigh the cost of the cable by as much as 100:1. We live in the information age here people, have some vision!

Construction works on the project is expected to be complete by the end of this year as all relevant studies, policy formulation and supply contracts have been concluded.

Well that's news to me. 'End of this year' ... really now? ... and yet all local projections seem to indicate that pricing for telecoms in South Africa will only start to reduce significantly from 2008 onwards. Anyone smell collusion going on?
