Hi guys

I'm thinking of buying the Pro version of Netbalancer. Two reasons:
  • Allows for prioritization
  • Easy way to block everything except the MP game I'm jamming

Before I pull the trigger: Does anybody know of a better/cheaper solution?

Game Booster? is free
Game Booster is an easy-to-use program that shuts down unnecessary system processes in order to improve the performance of resource-thirsty games. With an intuitive interface that makes it easy to switch between gaming mode and normal mode, Game Booster is a simple but powerful program.
Game Booster's interface is basic, with a list of 24 noncritical processes that can be shut down during gaming. Check boxes allow users to select specific processes.

No haven't used it there...just use it with a MMO

Consider upgrading your equipment, be it computer-components, or network connection, before considering software-related improvements.

Got SSD, or striped hard-drives? Moved pagefile/game files off the primary drive? RAMmed to the max? Fastest GPU/CPU? Got a 10mb DSL connection (or faster)?

Software improvement-applications is like driving a the VW Golf GT, and putting in a Ferrari performance chip - a poor analogy, but you'll get the idea. The car is only as fast as the hardware allows, consider "performance tuning", once you have the right equipment for it.

Network QOS won't help a thing, if the only traffic on the line, is the games' - Fix that first.

You misunderstand me. Its a network issue, hence netbalancer. The hardware is all fairly new...about 2 months old. SSD, powerful GFX etc.

Thats what I'm trying to get to. I can probably block everything else with a MS FW rule, but netbalancer seems more convenient. Bit hectic price wise...R300 and they seem to jump a version every ~6 months. :/

Have you tried the latest free version of NetBalancer?
The unregistered version is limited to a maximum of 3 process priorities/limits and 3 rules at a time. Since version 6.1 all other limits have been removed.

I'm using MikroTik RouterOS to throttle my stuff, because I shared my Internet with my brother and other WiFi devices. I also have a paid license for NetLimiter Pro and it works pretty well, but it is not as automatic and as good as MikroTik RouterOS's Queue Tree, which ain't easy to setup if you're new to it.
Like I'm even giving certain news servers more priority than others. Like if Mweb cannot fill up 1.6Mbps, then my Astraweb & Xsusenet servers will kick in to fill it up ;)

I don't like these applications that you install in Windows to control the traffic, because they install network drivers which can cause the system to crash - which I've had with both NetBalancer & NetLimiter a long time ago. I think their drivers are pretty stable now in Windows 7.

R270 ($30) for a license isn't that bad either, unless it is only applicable to one version that is short lived.

Yep latest. 3 priorities is very little..used to be 5.

idk...300 bucks seems kinda steep for software that is up-to-date for maybe 6 months. Considering a raspberry pi instead...but its got no 2nd interface which will make things difficult.

I'm running an HP Microserver N40L with MikroTik RouterOS in a VM and I only have 1x 1Gbps LAN on it.
With VirtualBox I assigned 2 network interfaces: 1 for LAN and 1 for WAN - to make monitoring & shaping easier.

So you may be able to do it with the Rasberry PI, but I haven't seen that being done yet - but then again I haven't searched for something like that either.

RouterOS only runs on MIPS & x86 architectures so I doubt you would be able to virtualise it on a ARM platform. QEMU & WINE might be an option but it's a long shot.

hmmm...that I can probably just do on the PC itself then. Looked into that before....but never did get it sorted out. I'll have another look at it with RouterOS...was smoothwall & ipcop before.

Edit: Looked up the old thread. Smoothwall & ipcop freaked out because I wanted multiple PPPoE links, not because of VM.

EDIT 2: RouterOS doesn't seem to like linux commands...at all. How do I troubleshoot it if Winbox isn't picking up the MACs & none of the standard linux commands work?
