Netbook or iPad

But it's all down to needs.

Yes, I use my netbooks for Microsoft Office, Powerpoint Presentations (video out) and Adobe Photoshop, also temporary Photo backups (Asus has 320GB 7200rpm drive).

That pretty much disqualifies an iPad.

Yea see I'd rather use a real notebook or even a PC to do that kind of work. I find doing anything resembling 'real' work on a netbook an exercise in frustration. Especially if it's something like photoshop which chokes on <3gb ram.

I don't like carting a big notebook around on planes and/or trips. I have a decent notebook that I use at home, but I won't take it on trips.

no I haven't had an iPad.

Oh, just wanted to know where you bought it.

Those of you that own an iPad - where did you buy? Directly from Apple in US? Amazon? I had a look at Amazon today, seemed pretty expensive and they don't have 32gb wifi+3G in stock.

No the main issue for me with an iPad as I say is the price. I think they can be a very functional device for certain needs, but you can get more for less with a netbook.

If you're getting a netbook, much sure it's got the 1.8Ghz processor or ION chipset, my mom recently bought a little Gigabyte 1.6Ghz with 2GB of RAM and it struggles to play HD videos in full screen.

There is of course another option given that one of the requirements that started this thread was to be able to check e-mail and wander around the web in bed etc.

If you order the Amazon Kindle (about R1800 all-in door to door in SA) which has free-for-life 3G (and WiFi) connectivitity, you can in fact do web-based e-mail from it, and access basic Web pages (without flash, streaming, downloads, etc., courtesy of an Amazon tie-in with Vodacom). Absolutely free, forever! Admittedly it is in monochrome, the browser and the device are not exactly Speedy Gonzales, and the keyboard is not super user-friendly. But what's not to like about the 'free for life' deal on a super-lightweight and supremely uncomplicated device?

I struggle to find a use for my netbook - and believe me I tried. Compared to my laptop it's underpowered and too cramped to be of any real use to me.

I'm using myus.com.... got some other stuff coming too so shipping is not going to be too much... I hope...

Depends hey, my shipping for the ssd i bought was nearly 500 bucks  and that thing is light!!!!!!

You should never hope when it comes to shipping, you should know. It may well be that the with shipping and customs the item will only be slightly more expensive. Not to mention the warranties will not be easy should something break.

Well theres 3 things I considered before buying:
1 currently not available in SA
2 price was excellent, exchange rate too
3 i'm already bringing in a bunch of other stuff. (myus rates decrease per pound/kilo as you increase the weight.)

PS: anyone needing to bring stuff In are welcome to pm me, i MAY be able to help out.

I had a netbook, and I now have an ipad 64gb with 3g :)

ipad is awesome, the netbook I got tired of working on tbh. havent worked much on the ipad, but geez it rocks. Its light, small and 9-10 hours battery life can't be beaten. My ipad is jailbroken so I have multitasking until iOS4.* comes out.

Only thing that gripes me is the lack of usb ports, and no camera, otherwise its really cool.

How much did you pay for it?

I need to get the woman a birthday present...

Apparently tge ipad has just been released in Namibia N$400 (R400) per month for a 32gb....
Damn I thought SA was ahead in africa....

The fact that they don't sell a model here is certainly not a plus. Just wait for something to go wrong or you need a warranty swap out.

Its not here YET since it was only released in July.... It will be here soon, hence local suppliers selling the old models 1201 on the cheap...

zakdoc89, don't worry about the warranty. Bought my 1201N from the US as well and it's covered by a 2 year international warranty. The offices are in Sandton and they were able to fix my 1201N, not yet released in SA at the time, and it was quite quick(about 3 days).
