Netbook pros and cons

So far the only bad thing about the Acer Aspire One . . . that awful track pad

Rest of it is brilliant. :D

I'm done with laptops.

1. They are crap expensive (You just pay for mobility)
2. You can do nothing to them except for changing the HDD and upgrading the memory.

That is the 2 reasons I hate them with a passion.

Make a Laptop which i can upgrade parts like the CPU and GFX card. And make it more reasonable priced and I'll buy one again.

For most people upgrading the HDD and adding some RAM will be the only thing they'll ever do to a desktop PC anyway. ;)

Anyway - this is about netbooks. :)

Netbooks - not for me. I got big fingers and tight fists.

Have a Aspire One and no complaints sofar. I work on it, get the moer in and then go back to my mac !

Nothing better than laying in the bed with your netbook.

I'm blown away with my msi wind.

I've learnt something, very portable laptop and a powerful big screened desktop pc is the way to go, or atleast for me.

Assuming you have one. Have u installled osx onto it? I'm running osx on my wind and its wonderful.

1# Excellent article - best I've read on Netbooks yet. Gets to the point and is so true. If your in the market for one the only thing not mention was take one for a test drive, you will be surprised how many people have one.

So tempted to byte you on statement number 2, but I'm sure other will show you the light and I'm on holiday so want give you any of my sarcasm (yet).

#3 But, I love my Ascer Aspire One - just upgrade to Ubuntu8.10 and besides the godawful tracpad (well all tracpads suck, i still like the old nipple stick) its all I want in a portable solution.

I tried Ubuntu but that wasnt entirely successful so restored it to the fedora based installation.

Before trying OsX I'd probably want to up the RAM to 1gb (tempting to do as I have it right in front of me) first.

And adding a GFX card......
and a Blu-Ray drive (when they're cheap enough)....
and a third hard drive for all those torrents we download.....
and another GFX card when BioShock 2 comes out...
and a 22" monitor (cause they're cheap enough now :))..
and....

Sure - if you're a gamer. The furthest most people will go is a new monitor and an external drive or two - both of which you can also do with a laptop. ;)

I dunno. The netbook manufacturers have lost the plot. They're crazy to ask anything higher than 3k for something thats basically supposed to browse the web. I was in the market and realised its all just broken and eventually went with a fully functional entry-mid level notebook.

R2500 EeePC with 2GB SSD, but have seen on special for R2200. I have the Acer Aspire One which is about R4200, same price as the better EeePC 901.

The MSI wind goes for R5K last time I checked
Why did you get the AAO if the EeePC was better?

The R2 500 price tag makes it possible to buy a netbook as a "second machine". But at close to R8 000 it no longer makes sense to buy a netbook
.

I don't know about that. I got the MSI Wind for R6000 from Take2. I am loving it. The portability is what really sold me on it. And it is cheaper than a lot of the other small laptops out there. The important thing for me is the portability. Yes, I could have gotten a slightly faster entry level notebook but the screen would have been 15 inches instead of 10 and the portability nowhere near as good.

If you need something light and portable I think that the price is justified.
