So I saw that Netflix will start offering its Starz Play service outside the US from 2nd half of 2010. It offers streaming of over 2500 new movies and TV shows.

I imagine SA will be excluded from this? How so? By the content providers supplying Netflix or by local legislation?

Wouldn't it make more sense to wait until after SA has been excluded before trying to imagine why?

Nope. I prefer to look at the pitfalls now. I doubt companies like MC or TopTV would have their protected status threatened. So I'm curious how they will protect their market or whether it's even possible for them to do so. Then I'll know whether (like (full) Paypal access), we will be waiting 5 - 10 years or months - or never. Maybe someone on the forum is familiar with the relevant legislation in order to shed light on the possibility of availability locally.

So when exactly is this happening...it's past the "2nd half of 2010" . I've used Netflix via a VPN service and i enjoyed the service but being forced to use a VPN is not only SLOW but mess with all other online activities [that don't require a VPN] . I would sign up again if they offered it without restrictions. Netflix also do not have the latest content for streaming , basically felt alot like DSTV content with a fresh blockbuster here and there.

That said Netflix = $9 [R80] a month subscription with access to ALL content on demand....compare this to DSTV which is R600 a month [the highly limited on demand content of DSTV is also R600 a month and they don't archive the content , if you don't watch it within a period you miss it , Netflix keep their content online indefinitely] .

Yeah, rates on subs are great. Well I see they just started in Canada in July, so it is happening. I'll email them and ask if any plans for SA but I expect to receive a generic response - if any. It's more important to know the situation locally as to how legislation would work.

Ultimately though, the media companies are screwing themselves with all this BS restrictions. I am going to stream my content one way or another. It's either going to be

a] A legal subscription service that is affordable and convenient
b] An illegal FREE [or priced independently of the actual content ala "dirt cheap" ] service that is rubbish , but convenient.

Up to now is flourishing, and [a] is inconvenient and being blocked . I'm not going to buy DSTV if they somehow interfere and block Netflix [while it's available to the rest of the world] , i'm simply going to watch the same content for free , so NO ONE is making money out of it, not DSTV, not Netflix.

One day i hope these idiotic corporates that do not know squat about technology, will figure this out.
