Netflix vs ShowMax vs FrontRow vs Vidi - pricing and content comparison

Probably going to be lynched for this, but the USD PayPal price that was highlighted in this thread makes for another interesting comparison...

For $7.99 per month, Netflix gives you a single SD stream. For the same money (if you pay through PayPal), ShowMax gives you two 720p streams.

Of course the Netflix catalogue still dwarfs anyone else's and it runs just about anywhere.

Tried ShowMax, but they streaming quality was really bad. I easily get 720p on Netflix, often 1080p, but ShowMax looks almost like 384 :(
Webafrica, home capped, 20Mbit ADSL.

I've seen a few complaints like yours... Random question: have you tried switching off your VPN/unblocker when trying ShowMax?

Tried ShowMax again tonight, the quality is still horrible, nothing has changed. Has anyone even got remotely close to 720p on Showmax?

I have. Been watching an episode of Band of Brothers almost every night. Tried a few movies. Watched some of the stand-up specials.

Tried it on 10Mbps ADSL (but that line has been broken since Sunday), but mainly been using a 6Mbps uncapped connection from a WISP. Default settings only - no unblocker DNS, and not using Google DNS either.

Region locked content needs to DIE!

Preach!

I agree that these new offerings need time to develop and should be supported, but it is pretty clear with the launch of Showmax that Vidi and Frontrow were pretty disappointing services.

Something I've been questioning is whether there is enough of a critical mass in South Africa for these services to work here at all. Much of the information that "leaked" ahead of the ShowMax launch suggested that Naspers wasn't just looking at South Africa. It plans to take this global. Maybe South Africa is just a convenient test bed.

Showmax AND Netflix is best.
Add: Filmefy.com and you can watch ALL Netflix content around the world. This site is part of Unotelly and when you link your Unotelly detail to Filmefy you simply select a country (if not in UK/US) and you can watch it. Does not work so well on Xbox 360 as I have a US live account. Works great on a pc though...
