Suppose you had the notion of updating your router firmware and after updating the router, the red light doesnt stop blinking... as they said it would. Even after resetting the router the red light still comes on each time. Is that a bad thing?

Is it possible to fix this?

Press and hold the reset button. It will go back to factory defaults. Not 100% if this will load the default firmware again but it should.

Yes.

Maybe. Would have to be done via the Serial port (if it has one) or the JTAG port. Best would be to google, they might even have a recovery utility & procedure to follow. http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/263

It helps to be more specific when asking questions like these, like it's a DG832 version3 etc...

Sounds like he has a DG834 V5 (red light) & sounds like he has bricked it.

Most come with the latest firmware anyway. How old is it?

If you tried downgrading it from the latest version, then you have definitaly bricked it.
It's not downgradeable. Send it back to duxbury.

TFTP won't work either.

No, factory reset does not reset the firmware, only the settings.

Can you at least access the thing? Reset and get a dhcp addy? If not = brick.

Yes, could have bricked it if the upgrade process was interrupted. But why do you say it can't be downgraded? I've downgraded my firmware version on my Netgear router without any hassles at all. I've done it several times when I felt the newest firmware release had issues. Just do a factory reset before you do it.

Going back from latest version with V5 just bricks it. Done it twice cause I couldn't beleive it either.
The previous versions firmware are all on the website and there is no warning either.
Duxbury just replaced them cause they were all new.

My problem was client host a mailserver (via dynamic dns) internally but the latest version doesn't do a "NAT loopback"
What I mean: http://www.netfilter.org/documentation/HOWTO/NAT-HOWTO-10.html

LAN clients cannot see the server useing the external IP (that the MX records resolve to ) & lack of a dns server resulted in me wanting to go back to an earlier version I knew worked.

Pft - FAT CHANCE!
