Netgear DG834GT Setup Problem

I have just receive my ADSL connection and all works well with my Telkom supplied modem.

I am trying to setup my Netgear ADSL wireless modem router. I can see the router from my PC, but it does not connect to my ISP ADSL account at Tiscali.

Any suggestions as to where to start looking?

I'll take my piece of cr@p and do so!

For those who can help let me describe what I am doing:

I have logged onto the router and entered my ISP username and password where required.

If I use a network cable between my pc and the router, and I create a new connection, when selecting the new connection my pc tries to connect but then comes back with error 678 the remote computer is not responding.

Your opinion but rather odd how my piece of crap (DG834) has been faultless so far.

PPPoE - Check
DNS IP's - Not sure what you mean, but I have selected 'Get Automatically From ISP'
LLC - Changed to this now
VCI 35 - Check
VPI 8 - Check

Do I enter my userid and password for my ISP on the router as well as on the Network Connection in Windows?
 
the connection will be established by your router only, not by your individual windows pcs - the DG834GT can not run in bridge mode - thus you must set the router's ip (192.168.0.1 as default) as your default gateway on your LAN connection in windows.
 
Is the router showing that a PPP connection is established?

If that is, then you are connected then you just need to sort out your network settings.

YOu say you use a network cable:

That means you need to go to your network card's properties, and change your TCP/IP settings.

Your IP must be in the same range as the router.

Gateway must be the router's IP
and DNS also routers IP.

you have filled in the pppoe username and password of your isp on the router, correct? Go to Router Status (under Maintenance I believe) and check un the heading ADSL Port if you have been assigned an IP ( ex 165.165.221.25). If so then you're online. Now go to control panel, network connections, right click on your Local Area Connection (or whichever connection you're using to connect to the router - wireless/cable) go to properties. Under Internet Protocol specify the gateway as the routers IP (192.168.0.1), you can also choose to fill in the DNS as primary 196.43.1.14 and secondary as 196.43.1.11

you should be ready to go after this

I am finally on-line...thanks for you patience and advice...I think it was the gateway settings that did the trick.
 
Hey good stuff fivelza ... please remember to turn NAT on as well ... makes your LAN a bit more secure.

Azreal I setup my LAN so that the router does DHCP so all the PC get's their IP address from a specified reserved range and also the gateway from the router automatically.

I had the DG632 which is probably the WORST product ever produced in the history of mankind. When it broke I got them to give me the DG834 instead, which hasn't shown any particular problems yet, but if you do look at the official netgear forums, you'll see something that resembles the MyWireless forums. Netgear has terrible support and tends to just ignore your tickets or send some bogus reply.

I have had DG834 now for approx. 6 months. Haven't had any problems with it and it was really easy to seup. Setup the wireless network and internet connection in under an hour and that is including securing the wireless network setting up forwarding rules on the builtin FW. :D
 
I do agree that it is very easy to use, it was my lack of understanding of how to set it up that caused me some problems.

Malec, you are correct that if you read the Netgear forums they are less than complimentary, but so far mine worked fine...I even at times have had up to 108mbs between my PCI card and the router.

Each to his own though ;) It is a little disconcerting when you post a question in the forum to be met with a response like yours :eek: But anyway thankfully there are other who want to help :D

If it's any interest... this router CAN run in bridge mode. Although it takes away the firewall and other security features.
 
Why do these idiot manufacturers distribute their product without proper documentation?
That just sucks, 99% of the crap people have is cos the documentation is nonexistant.
