Hey guys.

I have a intermittent sync issue on my line, which Telkom can't or won't fix. I currently have a Billion 5102 router and 384kbps ADSL. What I notice is noise on the line when I lose sync, SNR drops to around 4/5. Within a minute it's back, but it's annoying, especially while gaming.

From reading around, I see the Netgear DG834GT is apparently very good on noisy lines. Perhaps it will keep sync at least, I won't mind a ping spike or so when it would normally lose sync.

Any advise on that would be great.

Also, what's the diff between the Netgear DG834GT and the Netgear DG834.

Just the wireless features?

Thanks.

As far as i know it is only the wireless. = GT

I can highly recomend the netgear, recently had a firmware issue where it got stuck in the middle of an update, phoned UK support and they swapped it out for me no problems. Also ive never experienced many issues with sync or line noise. never used billion so i cant give a comparison.

I am using one of these.

In the beginning I had -- and still do have one serious problem with this device.

Try connecting it up to another switch -- particularly an auto-sensing / auto-negotiation one. ( YES I have tried straight-through as well as cross-over cables )

My particular example will transmit backwards and forwards trying to settle on a speed and link ( on the wired LAN )

When it settles you cannot ping it even although the connect light is showing a connection. This is on ALL of it's FOUR Ethernet Rj45 Ports.

It also does NOT like 3Com Nic's

I had to buy another make of switch to get it going -- and it only likes ONE of the FOUR ports. When I can get it to work everything is ok.

At the moment I am only using it as an AP ( it has that functionality )
Running the ADSL through a CISCO. ( So I can still surf HELLKOM in bed :D )

I cannot get the TURBO ( 108 ) to work -- but for that you need similar devices of the same make -- NETGEAR. ( IF I understand it correctly ) But I can get a solid 54Mb throughout the house.

If you want to run it through a switch into a little LAN ( TEN or more PC's ) check this "feature" out. Perhaps my one is just broken ? No-one was prepared to listen to my problem so I just had to make my own plan

You dnt have a router issue but a line issue, getting another router wont help you very much......

Try and get Telkom to fix it, bribe them or something....:)

Hehe. I'm not sure if that will help. You see, they send the same guy out each time, he doesn't even know what SNR and Line attenuation is.
