I just ordered ADSL 4096, and was wondering if cable length plays a factor in quality of signal.i only have one point in my house and my pc is quite far away from the point so i have to purchase roughly 30m of network cable from the router to my pc.i will mainly use the connection for gaming, will this be a factor?

Hi & welcome to the forum

30m is well within the network specs - you should have no problem. Just avoid running the cable parallel to power cables for more than a short distance.

thanks hey i will be running the cable through the ceiling so i just wanted everything to go smoothly when i get the call from Telkom to tell me my line is activated. How long do they normally take to respond to requests? i ordered it on monday.

depends where u are and available ports. Quick response is like the same day, but normally 5 days.

Why not try wireless, or is the signal too low? 30metres of cable...from some stores is like R7 per metre which equals roughly to an access point...why not go wireless?

I know u gonna use it for gaming but its like a 5-10ms difference to cable...but i could be wrong:p

well it is a wireless router and i do have a wireless usb adapter for the pc but i have heard bad things about wireless and gaming plus i got crappy signal in my room, i dont even get signal on my phone...

Im quite sure your room isnt the signal problem, if you dont have phone signal then thats a network problem and you are probably in a black-spot.
The wireles router is fine for gaming, i use mine and i play bf2 online and lan with no hassles. The 30 metres of cable are not going to be a problem if you are wanting to go that route around.

We've got a 60m network cable running through the roof to our outside office, no speed problems whatsoever ;)

The max length for a 100BaseT cable is 100m.

Yeah, that is just a quoted spec though, we have pushed it much further than that. especially if you using STP and know how to crimp well with shielded RJ45's.

thanks guys info has been useful i got the cabling in now im just waiting for Telkom to call me, im starting to get impatient caus i cant wait anymore to game online and to just know that im always online instead of yanking a 20m dial up cable through the house and tripping ova it atleast 3 times a day and busting my head on the floor.
