Hey all, sorry, I couldn't even think of a better name for this thread. but here goes my question:

recently or Credit card machine company, Sureswipe, upgraded the card machine software to now use our adsl connection as main connection. If the machine can't connect through adsl, it switches automatically over to the old connect-net modem, with sim card. The adsl connection is much faster, so better to use.

Now, my problem is, the cashiers is mainly brain-less, and does not always tell me that the adsl connection is not active. They can only see if it works, via the machine's screen, it gives a indication which connection is used.

The main problem usually that the lan cable connection into the machine comes loose, because of the heavy usage (movement) of the machine.

Now our butchery scales is also on the same network, but the software I use on my pc, shows me which scales are online, and which not. The cable connection is also the problem there normally.

Now what I want to know, is there maybe software I can use to see which of the card machines are online and which not? Something that check at regular intervals, so I can check whenever I want if all is fine. The card machines each have it's own ip address.

I'm not clued up with networks, ip's etc, so pls guide me in layman's terms?

Thanks

Hi, do you have a spare pc/office machine you can use as monitoring server?

I would reserve each device an address on the router, then I would use some monitoring software to poll the required devices, and sms/email me when offline.

Like Spiceworks (as per suggestion), or link analyst (very old), infact there are allot of these packages out there to monitor links between company branches, and or servers.
