Having a little problem getting one pc to browse over the network (local network that is)

Router is supplying Internet to all the pc's. - all working fine...
My PC (PC-01)has Vista Ultimate installed and sharing etc everything is enabled.
My Partner's PC (PC-02) has XP pro on and can see the network but can't cant connect to my PC. - Says : "Network Path Not Found"
My PC (PC-01) however can browse PC-02

This was all working perfectly fine a wile ago, then i got a moan from the otherhalf a few days ago that this error message pops up!.

I've gone thru all the settings, seems fine. I've even made sure the DHCP setup on my router is running correctly!.

Also - something i've noticed, My Vista Firewall refuses to enable!. but this i think is best left off as i want to install Zonealarm after i fix this other network issue

Need Help Please!.

Network sharing center, setup as Private or Public?
Password protected sharing if "Private", is this turned on or off.

Network is Private, and there is no if Private on or off.

However :
Network Discovery is - ON
File Sharing is - ON
Public Folder sharing is - OFF
Printer Sharing is - OFF
Password Protected Sharing - OFF
Media Sharing - OFF

This is exactly how the network's been working perfectly, until a few days ago...

Turn on "Public folder sharing" then select.

"Turn on sharing so that anyone with network access can open, change, create files." - 2nd option

go to the run, on your other machine and use the UNC path.
\\your machine name\public

The public folder is the default shared folder in Vista. Permissions are already assigned.

I do not make use of the public folder, and I had it working without having the public option enabled - even with this on doesnt make a difference.

yup, all machines are online, i can browse pc02, but pc02 can't browse my pc, however it sees the network

Try using static IP's instead of DHCP, not sure why but its solved the problem for me before.

installed any new antivirus\firewall software on your pc? or changed anything on your current one?

static ip's are the way to go!!!!

do you guys ever remember the limited or no connectivity with DHCP

geez that used to be so random and so annoying, add static ip and everyone's pc runs sweet

so you say i should forgo the DHCP setup and go manual?

Nope.

All pc's running AVG, and infact, my vista firewall won't enable. will be scratching around for a replacement

Are you logged on as a admin?
Windows firewall on or off?

yes the public folder is not what you use, use it to verify that your 2nd comp can find, connect and access the vista pc. try turning off the firewall, it won't completely go down. as sme rules can only be disabled via the firewall mmc.
