I have my Xbox 360 in the lounge and my router is in my bedroom along with my PC. I've seen somewhere that there are these little wall plugs with network jacks on them that allow you to plug a network cable into them and gain access to your network from any room in the house.

Does anyone know who I can can contact to get these things installed in my house instead of having to run CAT5 cable from my room to the lounge?

Unless you are planning on running them over the power lines (kinda expensive), you are going to have to run CAT5 cable anyway. You gotta run them through something and CAT5 is your best bet (never run your CAT5 adjacent to the power line or any other lines though). I think what you are seeing in the newer houses are pre-run cables with network jacks on the end. A lot of newer houses are having these installed IF you know what to ask for and IF the builder has a clue. They are not cheap though, you are looking at upwards of R600 a point (at least!).

Better to just do it yourself, run them through the roof and into the rooms you want. If you have spare conduit you can run them through that. Otherwise you have to glue them into the corners of the walls.

Too far for wireless?

The 360's wireless thing is a bit pricey for my liking.
Use any wireless access point then - as long as it has an ethernet port it should work.

OK - thats just a wall plate - you still need to run the cat5 from one wall plate to another.
Yeah I know. I'm not sure who exactly to ask to run the cable for me because I sure as hell don't know how to do it myself. :D Will normal builders be able to do it for me?

Yes, that is what I meant... that wall plate has CAT5 cable running behind it in its own conduit. Do you have conduits already dedicated for that? and who is going to run the cable for you?

Do you want us to give you names of companies that do that? They are not cheap.
Nope, no conduits. :o

Throw some sompany names at me.

Phone around to electrical contractors, some of them do network cabling.

I use a company called e-cables in Cape Town, try directory enquires to see if they are also in your area. They offer quick and professional service and reasonably priced.

It is really not that difficult to do it yourself. Buy the cable in a roll and the ends from a supplier (about R1000), buy the crimping tool (R300)... get a diagram of the wiring and you are away. Any monkey can do it.

Then climb into your ceiling.. make the little holes in the rooms you want, run them down the walls in the corner (then glue them into the corner) and Bob's your uncle. I'll even come over and show you how to do it. :p

If you want to make it look smart you can buy those wall jacks and hook them up yourself.
