so this is probably one of the more n00bst questions ever (so no flaming ;) )...

...but what would i need to buy to setup my own network and/or LAN. the cheapest possible options. i don't care about wireless etc

from about 3 pcs for a network to about 8 for a small LAN.

the network wont be running 24/7, and LANs will only be for the occasional game play

Do you have an ADSL router with LAN ports on the back?
Do all the computers have LAN ports on the back?

All you need is an 8 port network LAN switch (or even a hub). And direct CAT5 ethernet cables with the RJ-45 connectors on the ends.

About R300 bucks for all. ... maybe less. More if you need to buy NIC cards to go into each computer. Most newer ones will have network ports though.

If it is for gaming you might want to go for a Gigabit LAN though... bit more expensive but nice and fast.

gigabit lan is overkill for gaming between 8 max stations

its win if u wanna transfer plenty of data though

Basically you would need to buy a switch, at least 8 ports to connect 8 PCs, and a network cable for each PC. Most PCs would have a network card on-board; if not then you would need to buy one for each PC that does not have an onboard NIC.

Not sure what you want to do though since you say network/LAN which could be the same thing depending on how you look at it ;)

cool thx, all the pcs have network cards in 'em...

...used network/lan as i am not sure it the setup would be the same thing.

so would a switch like this SMC 8-port 10/100 Mbps EZ Dual Speed Switch and a few network cables do the trick?

[edit] not really gonna connect it to the net, as i use my 3g as my internet connection - although i am not against the idea
