Network problems in Pretoria

suddenly I am again connected to the 3g tower, miracle :D s still happens, or did some technocrat woke up (he must have been in bed with Rip van Winkel)

Do me a favour and chase him up the road to the WonderBoom South tower - there is nothing there yet...... still no signal indoors :(
 
The guy is so busy in Riviera that I dont experience any 3G problems - have been connected now for the past three hours :D
 
I was talking to quickly, back to GPRS in Riviera, with longest logg in times at 5min. What is happening to 3G :confused:

The answer is nothing..... I am in the same area (Wonderboom) and get an icon outside furthermore it is useless as it drop the 3g signal after a while unfortunately - that is why I went for iBurst as I was waiting for 2 months (and counting) for ADSL and no reliable 3g. At work it flies but I do not need it there.
According to V3G's posts in this thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=281869&postcount=96 the towers should be up and running by now.
 
I pressume everybody else in Pretoria are pretty happy, because it appears myself and adsl3g are the only ones with problems? So adsl3g we cannot expect any quick results, two against giant is not any easy battle
 
Alas, it would appear so. maybe we the only ones in the area worried about 3g....

So if I understand you correctly, then Vodacom is behind with the schedule of upgrading their 3G role out in Riviera and Wonderboom south. Its either up and running or it is not? It is that simple. ;)

Just a question - if the WB tower is on air how come I can get it 5/5 on 2 g and when I switch to 3g it loses signal to 1/5, and then reverts to gprs only. Judging from posts in this forum, a 64k sim will not sort this out either?

ADSL3G,
As 3G uses a higher frequency than 2G - 2000MHz against 900MHZ, the path loss is far greater for the same distance meaning that the signal from 3G will be weaker than the 2G signal. Also, the higher 3G frequency results in greater attenuation of the signal by items of clutter meaning that the indoor penetration of the 3G signal will not be as good as the 2G signal.

Due to the nature of 3G compared to 2G/GPRS, this weaker signal does not necessarily dictate to slower speeds as the modulation techniques used for GPRS rely on strong signals to realise high GPRS speeds - this is not the case on 3G.

Hope that lesson in basic RF theory partly answers your question. :)

To answer part 2 of your question - the switch to GPRS is determined by the signal level received on 3G. If you are using a datacard, try creating a 3G only profile to keep you on 3G when in a 3G area. If you are using a phone for your connection, see if it has a network setting for UMTS/CDMA2100 or something similar and force it to that. Unfortunately, some handsets (Ericsson V800 and Nokia 6680) do not allow you to select 3G only, while others (Motorola E-1000) do.

Thanks 3g_rox - RF theory 101 noted and absorbed. Unfortunately I do have the V800 - will see what happens when the other towers are on air.

Re the 64k card - I understand that will not improve anything.

I still contend that Vodacom must come and put a tower in my back yard - V3G - I got the space, free datacard with 1gig bundle and you can put a tower on my property ;) thats cheep AFAIK.
