Please help! I purchased a contract through Vodacom that included the Dell lap top. The problem I have is that until 3 weeks ago i could log on from my house. Then one fateful Sunday evening I could not log on anymore. I could only log on via GPRS, this didnt bug me as i know I'm in the sticks. I contacted the help desk and the service was really excellent. They managed to send a Technician out to my premises and got back to me, telling me that the signal is very bad there and there is nothing they can do. This to me is unacceptable as i used to have service and now don't. If I didnt have a signal to begin with I could understand. I am paying R600 a month for something i can't use. I have no need to log on from my office as i already have Internet access from there. I spoke to a friend of mine and he said the turn the receivers or towers to face the busy areas because of the festive season. I don't know if this is true.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

What are the 2G CellIDs in your area? - maybe brad can comment once the towers have been identified...

Sorry don't know. I can give him my network card number, there should be some history linked to it. (forgive me but i am a little technically challenged.)

Thanks for trying to help IC. My complaints are already logged so all that info is there. I also checked the network availability on the map supplied by vodacom and it shows GPRS as well as EDGE coverage in my area. I will settle for GPRS I'm not expecting too much am I?

Are you saying you're not getting any connectivity at the moment, even GPRS?

Can you make phone calls from the same spot?

My vodacom phone does work from my house. But there is no connectivity on my laptop. When i bring the laptop to work i connect just fine. so there is no problem with setting on the laptop.

Not sure where your friend got this information, but in the 10 years that I have been involved with the KZN Vodacom network, this has never been the practice. Upgrades are done to carry the anticipated extra traffic, but definitely no antenna direction changes are made to "face busy areas".

Furthermore, the sites which partially cover your area are both omni-directional sites so no amount of turning antennas should make any difference. I am aware that one of my colleagues has been assisting you wrt your loss of coverage.

Bruce, possibly if you can try to connect in a spot outside your house where the signal is likely to be stronger. Maybe the receive side of the modem has gone "deaf" and only works when the signal is stronger - I have seen this on the loose datacards but not on the embedded laptop device (yet).

Thanks Brad
When You say modem i take it your talking about the laptop modem. If so i manage to connect from my office. BTW I have only received good service from your colleagues and am not trying to smear Vodacom's name. I just feel that there must be a solution to my problem, other than trying to use the system outside. As suggested by your colleagues. Maybe he meant the same as you. I will try this weekend and get back to you guys on Tuesday. Thanks for the support.

Yes That's me. Just an update on what I've done concerning the signal. I do manage to connect via my wife's vodafone enabled cell phone. I contacted 155 and they enabled my embedded laptop sim to connect via vodafone and i could. Inserted the card back in to my laptop and no connection. He explained that vodafone uses a different router or something like that to connect to the Internet. So guys I don't know if this helps at all. By the way Happy New Year.
Cheers

When referring to "vodafone" do you mean the VLive APN? - you would have needed to change the default APN from 'internet' to 'vlive' and there are some proxy settings etc that would also need to be changed for this to work at all...

Yes the person on the other end enabled these Proxy settings so that i could insert it into my wife's vodaphone enabled phone to see if there was a problem with the sim. But when i re-installed it into my laptop I still was not able to connect.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Vodacom for their excellent service. As brad thaught the modem had gone "deaf" and was only picking up 3G from my office. This Causing the confusion. Vodacom furthermore contacted Dell and the technician arrived here this morning and replaced the antennae and the Sim card device (not sure what you call it.) Once again thank you Vodacom for your excellent service.
Regards
Bruce
