I would like to know where I can study to get a proper qualification of my Networking & Programming skills. I would prefer something that I can do part-time in a relatively short time, since I know most of the IT stuff already (or atleast I think I do).

I'm almost done with my BEng Electric & Electronic with Computer Science degree at Stellenbosch University. We haven't done much programming or network related stuff in that course, however I've done an introductory course to networking and I've been programming before high-school even.

I have experience (Intermediate) in: MySQL, Microsoft Access, PHP, Javascript & AJAX, C# .Net, Visual Basic and Java.
I know a fair share of TCP/IP, VPN's and routing tables.

Ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

My initial response to your question is that I think you are confused.

Bear with me.

Networking and programming are VERY different sectors of the IT industry. Unless you are contemplating programming new networking protocols then you really need to choose.

If you're good, there's probably more money to be made in programming.

Thats true (that networking & programming are different sectors), but the money is even better in engineering jobs.

I was more thinking in the lines of doing programming that would require a strong networking or database background. I thought that since I know much of both networking & programming that I could easily get a qualification somewhere or do you reckon it won't improve my chances of getting a better job?

Thanks for the response though.

Ok so you know some stuff already, this is good.

I would still focus on programming because your network knowledge will certainly come in handy.

One of my pet hates is when programmers pretend they know something about networking and then try and set-up the network. Pastel guys are renown for this.

Play to your strengths.
