Hi

Is it possible to network 2 pcs with just a network cable? If yes, what would be the steps required on the software side (Windows pcs)? And can it be done if the 2 pcs have different versions of Windows?

Thanks:D

If you have autosensing network cards its not neccesary to use a crossover cable as the cards automatically switch the TX and RX, you will also need to give each PC a IP adress in the same range and then use the network set up wizard to define a workgroup on each PC, then VOILA bobs your uncle

Some motherboards actually allow direct connections without any setting requirements. Top of the line Marvell Yukon onboard lan slots do this on the high end motherboards. No need for a crossover cable, switch or hub if you have a setup like this...

*right click* on "my network places">>>>"properties".
*right click* on "local area connection">>>>"properties".

a box will apear then:

*left click* on "internet protocol (TCP/IP)">>>>"properties".

*left click* on "use the following IP address"

IP address: 192.168.1.30 ( the last numbers(30) must be differant for ex. pc1= 192.168.1.19 pc2 = 192.168.1.40

subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 (the 2 pc's must both have this number)

*left click* on "ok"

is the 2 operating systems windows xp and windows 98...?

just remember to turn of all firewalls...

o and share your hirddives if you want to copy over files and so on...

to see if you are connected:

click on START-->PROGRAMS-->accessories -->command prompt.

then tipe in:

ping 192.168.1.__(what ever the other pc's IP is)

if it says reply...(something) then you are conected....do this on both pc's

if it says something else then restart both your pc's and try again...

for any more questions PM(private message) me..:D

GOOD LUCK

btw, if you only have a straight through cable and it doesn't work with your setup, you could always just pop off the adapter bit from one end with a crimp tool, and put it back the otherway round. Viola - instant cross-over.
