Hi all

Need some network experience here

We have 4 computers in the office

3 are on a domain and the 1 is not

I can browse the domain computers perfect from the non domain computer

but as soon as I try browsing the shared files on the non domain computers with the domain computers I get an error

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

What error?? Local perhaps the local security policy is preventing remote access? Firewall? Share permissions?

Looks like you have a permissions problem. If the error is "Access Denied", it is definitely permissions. A quick way to resolve this is to make sure that your user name and password on the domain controller matches your user name and password on the "workgroup" PC. PVT me with the exact error if you don't come right.

AH..... Could be DNS then, get the IP address of the workgroup PC and try to "ping" it from one of the domain PCs, making sure of course that it is in the same network range.

Just what I was about to say!

Also check (after successful ping)
  1. You can browse the PC via IP address
  2. DNS settings on the WorkGroup PC

If this is a "new" problem meaning that nothing has changed since it last worked ... switch off and unplug everything. My it works if you switch everything on again. And check for viruses.

K

Use START, RUN, \\"ip address" to see if you can access it.

Looks like your issue is DNS. Check the IP configs of the workgroup and make sure that it has the same DNS entry as the other domain PCs

Where were you all when I had a basic, very basic networking question a week or so ago?

But it matters not, I got around it. Although I might need you assistence again in a couple of weeks again when I also will need to set up a domain with some mandatory profiles.
