So i go to my client to change a lady from her lappy to a desktop

now the network point wont work and wont pick the other pc's up on the network with the desktop

so i think ok i will try another persons network point
the desktop picks up everything 100%

i try with the network point i need and nothing on the desktop

i then plug the network point back into the laptop and its working fine

i think ok lemme go put it back in the desktop
nothing

now the desktop is setup fine because it works on another network point
the network point i need is working fine because it works on the laptop

so if everything is working fine wtf wont the desktop work with the network point that works with the laptop :(

hope all this make sense

The one thing that comes to mind, the port has been forced to a speed / duplex which the Desktop does not support, or a mac based ACL.

The one thing you do not mention is if you tried anything else on that point besides the Desktop and old lappy.

yup it did not work on the pc that i got a point from to test the desktop

meaning on 2 desktop's the cable did not work but it did work on the laptop

seems it only works on the laptop

are you using the same cable all the time between the desktop and point and between the lappy and the point? If it is two diff cables then the desktop's cable might be faulty.

Failing that... obviously the desktop does not like that network point for some reason... must be some conflict with the network setup on the desktop.

Can you plug her neighbour's desktop into this point and see what happens?

Final resort... uninstall and remove all network settings, drivers, etc... and reboot... then re-detect everything and let windows re-setup the network.

its not the cable because it works on the pc i did try another cable did not help

yea i will uninstall it and reinstall it see if that helps

scooby how do i fix this mac address problem?

its a server setting or switch setting but as i understand it the port that the cable plugs into gets locked to the mac of the nic, they do this at rhodes university as well. I wouldn't be able to tell you which server software that can do this. Do they have an IT guy that can give you some insight?

You will need to look at the networking setup, if they are using any sort of MAC address restrictions.

Is it possible to speak to the guys that did the network install / config.

Do you know what type of networking kit they are using?

naaa man i did all the networking

i bought a 24 port hub connect to a telkom router with ip's for about 14 pc's

ppl plug their laptop's in they use desktop's, every other port is perfect just this one :)

We over complicated the problem by the sound of things.

Have you tried moving the LAN point to a other port on the ethernet switch, sounds like you have a few ports spare?

yea not really many spare hey

there are a total of 23 pc at any given time

depending who is out on business and what not

what i just cannot understand is both desktop and cable are working just not together

Are you able to ping the other PC's ?
Is the NIC Speed set to AUTO in the device manager console?
Do you get a link light on the switch and PC ?

phew im going back there tomorrow kinda ran outta time today hahah

will let you know everything

what i do know if the network flashes red and not green for some reason

why static, static ips rot my brain. put DHCP on the router :) otherwise try ping the ip that you have set on the desktop from anther pc (while the desktop that is not working is diconnected) maybe that ip is already used.

nope like i said scoobs i plugged another network point cable in and it worked perfectly

the static ip's have worked for the last 3 years

i have never seena problem where a network point will only work one pc and not any others :)

This is an odd one. I've come across some wird stuff in my time, but this takes the cake.

The network is simple enough, no advanced switches or MAC locking or so on. The laptop works ok, but not the desktop. They both work fine at another point. You've used multiple cables and that's not it.

Only thing I could add is the check that the actuall wall box is ok and wired correctly. Process of elimination as my IT mentor says

Lastly, try just temporarily swapping the port at the switch, and see what happens. If it keep up, then the port on the switch is faulty.

Hope that you get it right. Good luck :)

You did try a different cable right? Yeah this is a toughy, move another pc to this port and put the desktop in a port you know that will work with it?
