Never volunteer for anything . . .

the service pack makes no difference, as long as the version is the correct one.

I don't think SP's make a difference. Can't comment on OEM's but I made a new ISO with SP3 slipstreamed - worked fine at the office with our VL.

I downloaded one with SP3 slipstreamed. Has worked great with any XP Pro OEM key.

Yes - it changes the key, whereas the jellybean just lets you view it.
The older 1.5 version of Jelly Bean has a facility for changing the key but I just tried the one you linked to and - after phoning home to the mother ship - it worked! Thanks! :D

Or just find a compaq disk that would have come with the machines. That way it will not even ask you for a CD key and it will be legal as you have the sticker present. Then you can just image that and copy to all and you will not have to update the keys. Just a thought, that is what we do here (Our machines are HP so should be the same).

EDIT: When I say Compaq disk, I mean the Windows XP install disk that is specifically for the Conpaq machines, you should find an ISO online for one.

The service packs do matter. If you try an old SP1 disk for a later build of XP then the key doesn't work. You usually have to have the right build matching the one for which the key was generated. I think there is either the XP Pro or the XP Pro SP2 CD. I had this problem and tried both of the CD's for interest sake and only the more recent CD seemed to work. I could be wrong though.

The SP level makes no difference; XP is licensed per version, and type - not by OS patch level. The key on the PC will work for an SP as long as you use the correct disk, i.e. OEM.

yeah service packs make no difference at all

Sorry for this, but if I had read this earlier I would have looked around the office for a Compaq OEM and/or Recovery cd as I am sure I have at least 1 gathering dust there!

If all else fails I will go to the office tomorrow morning and look.

Matter of interest - what is the Compaq model?

/and I'm in PE!
