Was just wondering if anyone can enlighten me on the following issue...

Just upgraded from 4meg to 10meg line with Telkom Internet.

My general speed increase feels very good when browsing streaming and gaming.
But when i do speedtests I only get between 3.80 - 4.00 Mbps.
There is only one server where i constantly get between 7.80 - 8.00 Mbps.

I have included screenshots...
If anyone can shed some light on this mystery I would appreciate it.

The server where I always get a good result is in Centurion hosted by Telkom.

All other servers dont go above 4Mbps

After any change in line speed you need to have a port reset completed.

This sort of staggered speed increase is also normal - it will stabilise and your profile will synchronise to the new speed properly within 24 hours.

Thanks, will def do a port Reset tomorrow via 10210.

Funny thing is that the line has been upgraded for about a week now and the general speed increase is very good. Just the Speedtest.net results are confusing.

When the speedtest starts off it quickly peaks at 8Mbps and then quickly drops down to 4mbps.

Lets hope the port reset helps!!

Is your ISP account not rate limited still to 4Mbps?

This could be the problem if he is using a uncapped account. Could have happened that only the line got upgraded and not the data part.

@op are you on capped or uncapped? If on capped then it might be isp related and a couple of tests with a free openweb, webafrica, afrihost or axxess will quickly tell you.

I will check that tomorrow with Telkom when i do the Port reset...

From what I see, CW will be making good strides by the way you support the community on these forums...

Keep it up Crystal Web Guy!!!

Its Uncapped...
Its weird because my overall browsing and streaming speed feels supercharged and i do get a good result on that one centurion server...?

It's a pleasure, and thanks for the kind words.

You can PM me your DSL phone number and I can check to see what profile is loaded on the line for you if you'd like?

Your speeds will be better as there will be no more "overhead" on the connection even if still 4Mbps - you'll get absolute max 4Mbps now.

Ahh that is likely your problem unless you have a 10Mbps uncapped account.

Speed is limited by your actual line speed or account speed. Your speed will be equalt to which ever one is the lowest. You can have a 10Mbps line but a 4Mbps account then still only get 4Mbps because of the account.

If you have a 4Mbps line but a 10Mbps account you will still only get 4Mbps because of your line speed.

If your line is the limiting factor it will likely be slighty slower than tour sync speed due to addl overheads.

The account speed limits usually only come with uncapped accounts so you might want to get a package equal to your line speed for best speed.

You might be getting full speed on the Telkom speedtest server because they might not be limiting traffic to their own network or speedtest server.

All sorted...

Did a port reset and changed profile to 10Meg...

my speeds are now extremely fast...!!

Thanks to CW Guy...

When running a speediest for your line, this is what you should be recieving.

1Mbps Line = 0,85 mb DL (Max)

2mbps Line = 1,75 mb DL (Max)

4mbps Line = 3,51 mb DL (Max)

10mbps Line = 7,02 mb DL (Max)

20mbps Line = 14 ± mb DL (Max)

What games are you playing where you can feel the difference from 4mb to 10mb? Thats absurd.

I'm on a 1mb line and any game server in Jhb gives me 8-15 ping. Speed has no effect on latency.

That completely depends on the case. Use Skype/teamspeak while gaming and you will have lag unless you upgrade the line. If you have multiple people in the house gaming at the same time, you will lag with a slow line. Upgrading from 4 to 10mbps reduced my average ping, since our packets did not have to queue anymore, I now receive 160-165 ping EUW LOL instead of 170-180. I also allows me to download updates quick, which is a plus.

Disagree with you saying max, getting 8.6mbps down at 3km on 10mbps.

If im not mistaken the 10Meg lines have better upload of 1024Kbps which i would think could improve your online gaming experience...?
Im no expert on these things but my gaming does feel a bit better, not that it was at all bad on a 4meg line...

Upload speeds are 10% of your download. Exept for 1, 2 & 4Mbps are all 0.40 up.
