New 1TB hdd

In my opinion there is no 'best' brand. They all have their own traits and are all slightly different. The latest Samsung F4 series gets my vote. Quiet, cool, fast, and best of all...cheap. Out of the 3 Seagates I've owned, 2 failed, one after 5 years, the other after 1 week. But that's not to say that if I had WDs that they wouldn't have failed too.

In my eyes there are 2 main criteria that affect the reliability of a drive. Luck, and the way you handle them. Have a lucky streak and treat your drives with some care, and you've got a good chance of them lasting for years.

Apart from all the pros that go with Samsung, they're one of, if not THE, least complex and fiddly ones to recover.

Thumbs up to Samsung.

Thanks gents hot sharing your experiences. I'm saving up for a WD multimedia player... Now I'm beginning to reevaluate that.

I was under the impression that WD manufactures the best HDD out there... that doesn't seem to be the case? Or do I have the wrong end of the stick? :)

No, no one manufactures the best HDD. But I'm sure many people think the same thing, probably due to the price. The best HDD is the cheapest. ;)

And their HDDs have nothing to do with their media players. ;)

I'm going to get another 2tb Samsung next month. Have a 1tb and 2tb already and they going strong, run very quiet and cool.

The WD multimedia players are great products, go ahead and get one. One easy guideline to stick to: just backup your irreplaceable files like your docs, photos and maybe music. If your 2TB full of tv series and movies dies you can just download it all again. Once you're in the habit backing up is so easy to do, and very worthwhile.

Viva Samsung ;)

The Western Digital Raptor is the best hard drive with platters & a read/write head that money can buy. Not as much storage as the others, but a fantastic drive to use as your OS/System drive. Now it has been replaced with SSDs.

Why not buy any media player like a EGreat,Patriot,Mede8er,MIDTE media player. Then buy your prefered HDD? How much was the wd media player? I'm sure it comes without a hdd.

Thanks for everybody's input. I went with Seagate in the end.

Sounds to me that all the hdds is as good as the day it was manufactured on - hopefully I don't have a Monday or a Friday one.

Yes the WD Live is HDD-less and gets attached to a external HDD/flash drive. It's one of the cheapest "decent" ones, and has regular firmware updates.

There is nothing wrong with the WD hard drives. You can go ahead and get the player and a nice WD hard drive.

Personally, I would go for the Mede8er though! ;)

Alright, it's not a media player... A friend sent me this back in Feb and it looked very interesting. I really considered it at that stage.
