New 3G device manager for Linux!

Hi Pablo,

Is there any indication when will card with single USBTTY device will be supported?

Still waiting for it patiently :D

Cheers.

Hi kgb0y,

thanks for the GT Max 36 info ! VMC2 already supports single port devices, (even thou I don't have any around, and had to fake it with a Nozomi only setting its data port). I had preliminary support for Novatel's U630 thanks to a British user, although I never find out if it worked as he never replied (perhaps that means that worked flawlessly ;)

What device do you have on mind? Once I solve a couple of issues, I could send you a preview of the thing, and u can play with it.

Regards,
Pablo

Hi Pablo,

VMC2 come with single port devices? That's a good news indeed :).

I would like to test it on Sierra Wireless 875 card. Frankly speaking Sierra card perform better compared to Option/Globetrotter. Signal strength obtained much better.

Please send me the preview of VMC2 after you've ironed out the issues.

Cheers.

Exit code == 2 means that there's a conflicting option in your pppd conf files. VMC will link whatever profile you're using (~/.vmc/wvdial-profiles/foo ) to /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial. Try to remove /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial (symlink) and copy your backup file there. Anyway, if you were using wvdial and it was working for you, there should be no difference with this app. U can tweak the template that generates the wvdial.conf at /usr/share/vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux/resources/templates/wvdial.conf.tpl

hey pmarti
i tried both solutions you gave me, but i have no luck..

What I meant is that might be your /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial points to a broken symbolic link. Make sure that /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial points to, say, ~/.vmc/wvdial-profiles/default . It should work!

1.99.7 Released

Hola people!

I've just uploaded the first public preview of VMC2 (1.99.7) to Betavine. Note that this is a preview of alpha quality, so expect bugs. Anyway I hope that the new features will be worth it. Check out the release notes to find out what we've been up to.

Pablo

Hey pmarti

problem solved. i deleted the vodafone app threw synaptic! hahahaha, im such a noob still.

-----useless info to follow----

the week i had to spend with windows again was absolute torture! things crashed (web browser and vodafone app for windows - twice), and my internet was being drained without me even doing anything.

i'm so happy to have linux up and running again.

Hi. I installed the *vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux_1.99.7_all.deb* in Kubuntu 7.10 after solve all dependences (python and more).

Access is in _internet_ , pannel, but if I start the aplication appears a window with the text:

Do as it says:

sudo apt-get install python-serial (you'll need to add universe to /etc/apt/sources.list )
sudo chmod 0660 /etc/ppp/*-secrets

Hi Pablo,

It seems VMC2 Alpha installation somehow cause the normal wvdial to failed! Exit error=2.

It was working fine before I installed VMC2. Have to uninstall VMC2 to make wvdial work again.

This is strange!

VMC2 links /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial to ~/.vmc2/dialer-profiles/foo instead of ~/.vmc/wvdial-profiles/foo

When u get that exit code == 2, make sure that /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial is pointing to a file that exists. Running VMC1 and VMC2 in parallel may cause some problems, I haven't tested it ;P

Tried VMC 1.99.7 on Gutsy, but without any success. It shows 'Unknown Network' instead of 'Vodacom SA', and the Connect button does nothing ... Once a profile has been set up, it seems it is only possible to add new profiles, not edit the existing one? Where do you set up the APN? I couldn't see anything in the profile settings. Back to 0.9.7.3 for now ...

v3gout give VMC2 a bash man! :)

The 'Unknown Network' thing occurs because we're changing the format of the file that bootstraps the networks database. As we haven't decided the format (and we don't have all the necessary data of *all* networks) we're just including the ones we've got all the required data. You can find it at /usr/share/vodafone-foo/resources/extra/networks.py. If you send me the diff, Vodacom-SA users and me will be obliged to you :)

The connect button does nothing problem: This is a bug that will be fixed in the next release. It actually does something thou, it wrongly assumes that the connect state machine is in place, when its not. Wait till you see the "Leaving NetReg and Entering into ImDone" line in your log, and the button should work I promise!

There's no way to edit a profile yes, the feature was developed quickly and I couldn't write all the necessary stuff. It will be fixed in next release.

The APN thing disconcerts me, its there!

Hi Pablo,

Hmm ... I'll wait for the final version of VMC2 before trying again. Need the HSDPA card to be usable all the time for now. No time to troubleshoot.

Cheers. :D

Pity :( I was counting on you guys to test the new features. This is alpha software and yes, it might cause some troubles. But on the other hand, the less feedback I receive, the slower the progress. There are some obvious bugs in VMC2 that will be ironed out soon, but 1.99.7 is quite usable, got reports from other users and everything worked for them.
