Hi guys.

My girlfriend got the 10GB deal from 8ta yesterday. We bought the huawei E173 dongle with it. After a huge struggle to get the damn thing installed on her laptop (Acer Aspire 4930g), we couldn't connect to the internet. From my desktop it works perfectly though.

It keeps on giving a "error 628: The connection was terminated by the remote computer before it could be completed."

If tried online help, updating drivers, unistalling drivers, downloading new drivers for her dongle but nothing appears to work!!!

All the information was correctly set up and is exactly the same as on my desktop.

We are both running Windows 7 x64, but she had vista 32 on her laptop before we installed windows 7. I've seen a few forums where the people complain about not being able to connect to their broadband after upgrading to windows 7...

Does anyone know of a solution?

Speaking under correction here (blame whiskies!)...

Unplug the E173.

There should be an icon in the task bar (bottom right of screen) for wireless connections. Open it and find the open connection or enabled device. Disable it. Plug in E173 and continue...

Have you tried connecting without using the dashboard? win 7 should make it quite easy as long as drivers are available

I did yes... I made a new connection and tried it trhough vodafone's connection as well.

Same error.

@ MickeyD

I disabled all my network devices, step by step, even the Mobile Broadband Connection.

Still the same error...

Follow MickeyD's advice and disable the onboard device. It should then pick up the modem in the same part of the taskbar (by wireless connections named telkom-sa iirc) Try connecting with that making sure the apn is internet.

Same error.

Remove the modem. Uninstall the dashboard.

Install this application: http://www.pro-it-education.de/software/deviceremover/

Run the application and choose View> Device Remover Devices Display Mode>Choose Show only hidden/detached devices.
Remove all hidden or detached devices (make sure of this).

Reboot the pc, insert modem and try again.

@ teraside...

i dont know what to remove... There's a sheetload of devices. I've been exporting the device tree for the last 30 minutes and is standing on 80 pages. What devices should I look for? How would I know what the modem is? Is the dashboard the 8.ta application?

Sorry man.

If you have the view on hidden/detached devices you remove everything listed. I thought I made it clear?

Those are crap devices and services that were left over through the lifetime of the pc. It is safe to remove.

i've removed all the modems and other devices and left the devices i know i will use in the future... Still the same error.

i'll give the call centre again to hear if my account is ok...

PS - what connection type should it be? RAS(modem) or NDIS?

ok... the problem is even worse now. after i did the device removal, the device shows it is missing drivers. i've tried reinstalling them, but it doesn't want to work...

i did a system restore and all the drivers are back.

I had a similar problem at the beginning and everything worked after I uninstalled all the vodafone/vodacom stuff.

i uninstalled my vodafone stuff as well...

Which connection type are you using under tools>general. if i use the NDIS, i get a connection terminated error, and if i select RAS(modem) i receive an error 628...

I phoned the helpline which said my simcard is activated, but when i phoned the store, they said they have trouble with their billing stuff... The helpline said the billing shouldn't effect connectivity if it shows that the simcard is activated...

So yeah, which connection type are ou guys using?
