Hi All,

Thinking of replacing my ageing netgear as I think it is about kaput. Sure there are existing threads, my keywords didn't find what I wanted though.

I've seen a lot of mention of MikroTik on here, can this be configured for ADSL use - obviouisly using another adsl modem to actually connect - I've got another DG632 which I'm sure should be able to be configured to "modem only."

I'm thinking RB2011 or 751 as I want WiFi built in and traffic management.

I am a .netdeveloper but have interests in networking and hardware, would I be able to figure this out and configure it myself?

If you are just looking for wireless for your home then rather just purchase an ADSL router like a Billion or Dlink, they both offer fairly decent routers at a good price. The configurations are really straight forward...

I use a Billion BiPac 7300G, it does everything I need.
I have about three Dlink routers, two bigger Billion routers and a Cisco 877 but its all overkill for my home network.

I doubt the Billion has the traffic management features I need (I want to monitor individual IP usage and shape), secondly wireless performance is not great - new routers feature dual-band n!

Anyone used the new Asus dual-band routers/ router-modems? Looking at N15 or 66

Considering a entry level Mikrotik is < R500 you can choose what you want in a router and go that route another time if you feel like it.

Hi There,
The Mikrotik will give you a lot of flexibility in the monitoring and shaping but you will need to spend time in getting it configured. There is a lot of material on the web telling you how to do it or you could get a network person to spend some of his quality time for a fee to do it for you. Treat it as an education in understanding networking.
Personally I do not have a need for it. I just want the connectivity with a bit of QoS and I have found Netgear fine for that but I do understand you might need more if you want to look at IP Usage. To get you started, and it might be an idea before you invest to do some research, here is the link to the Mikrotik Wiki

Thanks for all the replies everyone, much appreciated!!

Is it possible to replace my router with a Netgear DGN2200 (to serve as the modem & AP) and then add a mikrotik 750 to do the routing etc... behind it?
