Hi folks

As you might have seen there are some new advertising slots on the main page & forum. As discussed a few weeks ago this was necessary to cover the additional costs of running MyADSL (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=20297&highlight=advertising). This new advertising should cover all our costs, even with our higher BW usage (it looks like we will sit between 30G and 40G per month :D).

Can you please give feedback regarding these ads: Are the pages still loading fast enough, are the ads irritating you/do you find it acceptable, does it throw out the design in your browser etc.

Regards,

RPM

I am fine with the new ads. The people who support MyADSL will get a 2nd look from me in terms of preferred choice! (People/companies who spend money for advertising on MyADSL = support for MyADSL.)

I didnt realize there were ads until it was mentioned (custom css sheet) but so long as they're never in the position where they can exert undue influence then as far as I'm concerned its all good.

I hadn't been to the main page in a few days. I went there tonight and was rather shocked to see that it now contained five ads. I had no idea there would be so many ads at one time. Sorry to go against the flow, but it really does irritate me. Is it absolutely essential to have so many ads at one time? If it is, then I'll just have to get used to it. But I must say that if I visit a site that has many adverts, I usually don't go back - so I really hope this many ads won't put off potential members.

Even though this is my opinion, I will always support what is best for myadsl.

Hi VQuest

Thanks for the feedback and your continual support of MyADSL. I really appreciate the honest feedback from one of the guys that have been with us from the start (who saw the evolution to where we are today).

We needed to generate additional funds to cover the running costs of the site and ‘organisation’, but would also not like MyADSL to look like a commercial site. Unfortunately as the site grew, so did the monetary requirements. I know it is not always transparent how much it costs to keep MyADSL going and to ensure that everything is done professionally, but we simply needed the additional income. Apart from the dedicated hosting, BW and advertising costs (adwords), there are many hidden costs like communications (phone, mail), prizes, presents (not always published for various reasons), meetings etc.

I understand your irritation with the additional banner ads and hope this will be the most we will ever have. I sometimes wish we can go back to the old days where the MyADSL cost me a few hundred bucks per month, but those days are long gone :D This more active and professional site and organization does provide us with far better opportunities to achieve our goals and play an increasingly important role in the SA broadband environment.

RPM

Hi RPM

Many thanks for the explanation. Although I certainly don't have a clear idea how much it takes to run the site, I do know it's a great deal. I have always supported the idea of advertising, as I know it's essential to the running of the site. I guess I was just kind of shocked that we went from one ad per page to five. I'm just quite thankful that the actual forum only contains two ads - one on top and one on bottom. I will get used to the extra ads in time.

Thanks again for providing us with what has proved to be an essential platform for internet users. :)

Works great rpm - everything loads fast - just one thing though !

For standard non animated banners 468x90 or 468x60 you should strictly stipulate no bigger than 10k.

A bad example would be the "billion" advert - there's no reason that needs to be 24k, in fact, it can be saved with a file size of 8k and still look more than acceptable.

In terms of animated of the same size, 15k is usually the industry "standard"

Hi BB_Matt

Thanks for the feedback. We have a limit of 12 k (will reduce that now), so the billion ad slipped through somehow. Compressed it...should be better now :D

After reading the thread I went back to look, I honestly didn't even notice. Then i started to think what a waste of time advertising there.
I am very much mistaken though cos I can remember the advertisers but not where I saw them. Advertising is a whole different ball game and man can they play ball.

Discrete yet effective. Well done RPM

Cheers

Hi RPM,

I don't have much, but if necessary I am willing to contribute in order to keep our site alive.

Hi Celemasiko

Thanks for this generous offer, but this is not necessary. The reason for the added advertising is to keep MyADSL secure regarding finances. We might even have a few bucks extra for some prizes or free promotional items :D
