Guys, I need some help for a friend of mine.
He needs to repair the aircon on his Ford Telstar. The quote he got was about R6000.

I'm sure he'll be able to install a new aircon for this old car at a cheaper price. He must do something since he's got twin baby boys (2 months old). They planning to go away for a couple of days.

Do you know anyone in CT/Northern Subs who can help?

thx :)

That is unfortunately the price of Aircons :-(

I don't know anyone in Cape Town, but it shouldn't cost 6k unless every single component in the AC is broken? Someone needs to investigate. Could be as simple as a shortage of gas/leak or as bad as a screwed compressor.

At worst it's the compressor that broke or the clutch on itself if he is turning it on and the airconn isn't kicking in there is a 99% change it just needs gas

New compressor for my fiesta was about R1500. 6k seems a bit excessive, even with labor included. Must be some serious damage

Friend just mail me after telling him I'm talking to you guys...

Thanks for investigation. Did u let them know its a 1993 Ford Telstar, old aircon system. There is a gas leak and has caused the compressor to fail and also need to change the bottle dryer or something.

I had a 93 mx6 which is the same as the telstar.

got my spare aircon parts from www.macsauto.co.za

Thx I'll pass these details on to him. His latest quote is R5500 INCL. This does NOT include the compressor. Apparently they must send compressor to Jhb for repairs.

Hi,

The aircon is made up of three main parts: the compressor and drier; the evaporator and the piping / tubing.

The compressor and evaporator are the most expensive parts. The labour involved in changing the evaporator is high as it involves removing the dashboard.

Sounds like a system overhaul to me. Blown compressor and maybe a leak to be pinpointed and fixed.

Ok, so in your opinion it's not far fetched ito the cost? Thank you

I literally just had my aircon repaired on my Polo and I had quotes from R11 000 to R9000, managed to find a place that reconned a lot of the parts and it cost R4850 in the end, yes I'll be broke Dec and Jan but my aircon is fixed. This is in JHB though, they've also guaranteed the recon parts for 6 months, which is exactly the same as the new parts from the other places guaranteed.
