I assume the PaperWhite isn't as harsh as a LCD screen?

It's more like a soft glow. Perfect for reading. And it has many levels of brightness.

Funny you guys asking how often I read without light source. My kindle time seems to spike whenever I have a power failure. So no light even if I wanted to.

And to other guy wanting Kindle to read in the sun, you'll be perfectly happy without backlight.

I'll add another recommendation for the Paperwhite - wonderful device. Only got mine when my normal Kindle broke. It's such a pleasure to use, especially when it's around twilight and the daylight doesn't quite cut it anymore.

Just an FYI, the Paperwhite doesn't actually use a backlight (as in, it's not actually lit from the back), but more from the edges inward. Part of what helps it reduce eye strain considerably.

I've got a paperwhite and the built in light is nice but honestly, it's not a big deal not having one. If you've managed up till now reading paper books you'll have no problem enjoying your kindle without a built-in light!

The light in the kindle serves a dual purpose. In a dark environment you have the light on dim, not bright. You use the bright light in brightly lit rooms to reduce the glare and reflection you sometimes get with artificial light. The kindle works best in sunlight, I find, where the light is not needed at all.

Has to do with the refresh rate of the e-Ink screen rather than the backlight.

It's say it's more to do with the light coming from the side rather from behind, so it's not like a torch shining in your eyes and therefore less strain.

I've had a kindle since first gen and never missed not having a backlight. Currently own the 2012 cheapy version with special offers and it's great.

Finally got my kindle today - not bad. Smaller than I thought it would be, but since it weighs less than a paperback I'm not going to complain.

The ads are fairly benign. So far just the one on the screen when I turn it off.

I have the Voyage - been extremely happy with it. Functions perfectly, the backlight is wonderful and the pressure-sensitive spots on the side make page turning even easier. A small thing, but I love it. Also found it a little faster then the paperwhite. Not a huge thing, but nice.

I won't use any device in a dark room (lights out) as I find it stressful on my eyes, I always have the lights on.

Of course some samples are entirely prologues or introductions but still...
Oh and pressing words for the dictionary. Give it a few months and you'll find yourself reaching for the words in a regular book.
