New AVG v8 chomps bandwidth

Well, I've just uninstalled AVG 8, and the PC seems to be on steroids, it's flying! Kaspersky 7 FTW!
 
agreed , avg 8 was a step backwards for pcs that could run 7.5 without many troubles...ver 8 is just - overkill!
 
I think if you've got anything slower than a Core2Duo laptop/desktop, don't install AVG 8.
 
I'm using AVAST, I removed AVG 8 this morning!!! So far so good, my internet is also alot faster with avast now that AVG is gone!!!!

ClamAV for a weekly scanning schedule on any Linux box works just as well :D

What OS you running on that system?

I'm running AVG 8 Internet Security on an Asus Dual Core laptop with 2GB RAM (Vista Business) and it's very fast....

Your system is a monster...and if AVG is slowing it down, there's something wrong.
 
I don't know I'm just used to a fast system. I'm not saying my system crawls with AVG, I just feel it crawling. You may feel my system flying with AVG. It's all about personal standards. Bottom line is that it does slow the system down, explorer, outlook etc ;)

LOL....you sure they didn't accidently gave you a Celeron CPU?

If you think Outlook is slow, don't try to run Adobe Photoshop CS on your system - stick with the basics. :p

Rofl! Now I'm convinced that your standards of judging performance is very low :p If you're happy then stick with AVG 8, just don't expect the guys with 'high' standards to use it ;)

Agreed;) After years of using AVG I'm very disappointed with this new version!!!:sick:
 
I actually feel kinda sad. I've been supporting Grisoft for a couple of years now but since the new AVG 8 does not really please me I had to get something new. I must say that the current Avast is much better than AVG 8 and I'm also using OpenDNS now.

Bottom line is, the only for me to go back to AVG is if Grisoft does something super in the future or Avast does something stupid but for the time being Avast will be my new friend.
 
So for those of you that aren't using free AVG,wht are u running(free) now then, Avast?
 
How much bandwidth do you guys think will be saved if link scanner is disabled? I've got a pay as you go 3G connection at home so I already download my AVG updates at work and stick them on my flash disk for home. If AVG is going to be using bandwidth heavily, even with link scanner disabled, maybe I need to change to Avast or something else that's free. What do you think?

Computer viruses have been around longer than the commercial Internet. The earliest viruses were spread via infected floppy disks rather than over the network, and ironically (given current claims that "Macs don't get malware"), one of the first viruses to appear "in the wild" on home computers was written for the Apple DOS operating system that ran on Apple II systems. That was in the early 80s, although there were viruses that propagated over the ARPANET (the predecessor to the Internet, which connected universities and government facilities) in the 70s.

Since then, thousands of viruses have been written and released. "Virus" is a broad term when it comes to computers. Any computer program that can replicate itself and run on a computer without the permission or knowledge of the user can be classified as a virus. As with biological viruses, some are relatively benign (perhaps displaying a message on the screen), some are highly annoying (for example, causing your computer to reboot at odd times), some are destructive (erasing critical files from your disk and disabling your operating system) and some are downright dangerous (causing sensitive data from your computer to be sent to the virus writer).

The first viruses tended to be little more than pranks, but virus writers have gotten increasingly malicious over the years. They've also gotten sneakier in coming up with ways to disseminate their code, from "driveby downloads" on web sites to viruses hidden in word processing documents or spreadsheets.

Any computer that's connected to a network - especially the Internet - is vulnerable to viruses, regardless of what operating system it runs. Windows is the biggest target of virus writers because of its greater market share. The proliferation of broadband "always on" connections has made it easier for viruses to spread since the computers are connected to the Internet constantly rather than only for a short period at a time as with dialup connections.

All this led to the rise of the Anti-Virus program. Companies such as Norton and McAfee built their fortunes on the virus threat, and by the year 2000, AV software came to be looked on as something that was as essential as the operating system. For most people, the first additional program that you installed after installing an OS was one of the major AV programs. AV programs generally work by scanning the files on your computer and comparing them with known virus "signatures" and "definitions" - the code that identifies the viruses. Some also use heuristics that, rather than looking for specific matches to virus code, look for code that has the characteristics common to viruses (think of this as a type of profiling, as when a law enforcement officer looks for suspicious behavior rather than having a hard description of a specific suspect to look for).

AV programs do a pretty good job of protecting computers from viruses, but none of them are perfect. And they can also create problems. Some of them get overzealous and identify legitimate programs as possible viruses. Many of them have to be turned off when you install new programs or the installation will fail. There are numerous cases where all sorts of mysterious application problems are finally tracked down to a conflict with the AV program. This is so common that when troubleshooting certain problems, the first thing you do is turn off the AV software to see if that fixes it. Most recently, Symantec users who installed XP SP3 found themselves unable to connect to the Internet and wireless networks because a bug deleted their network connections (see the News, Hints, Tips and Tricks section for more on that).

Then there's another trend in the AV industry: that of loading up additional security programs with the AV software. These "security suites" often contain firewalls, intrusion detection programs, anti-spyware programs and more. That's all well and good if you want all that, but many folks don't. They just want AV protection, and it's annoying to have to spend time disabling the other programs, not to mention having to pay for a lot of stuff that you have no intention of using.

What brings us to the third complaint I hear from people about their AV programs: they cost too darn much. Once upon a time, you could buy an AV program for a set price and continue to download definitions for it for years at no extra charge. You only had to pay again when you upgraded to a new version of the program itself. Today most AV programs are sold on a subscription basis. You have to pay every year to keep using it. And that annual price keeps on going up. Most folks didn't mind paying $19.99/year for Norton AV, but now that it's $39.99, if you have a few PCs in your home, it adds up fast.

All this may be the reason that I'm hearing from more and more people who tell me they don't bother to run AV software at all. I frequently hear from techie types who say they "run bare" and have never had a virus infection because they avoid the types of user behavior that are most likely to result in one. They don't open email attachments they weren't expecting, they don't visit unknown web sites, they don't exchange files with people they don't know, and so forth. Others who aren't quite that brave are turning to a handful of free AV programs that are available on the web. These are very simple and basic programs and may not be updated as frequently as the better known commercial packages, but their advocates look at them as "better than nothing."
