Good people,

Any of you bought or used New Balance running shoes before? www.newbalance.co.za

I am considering buying them but would like to know how they measure up against e.g. Nike.

I know quite a few people who are happy with them - including a 'foot' doctor.

Thanks, that sounds promising. I was worried it is a fad.

I did not really reappear, I just come and go, xrapidx.
 
I am very happy with them and it's my second pair in a row :)
2 of my friends also swear by them, but to me they are just running shoes with no hassles.

I picked mine up at a Totalsports at a good price compared to other places last year.

I was very surprised at the level of knowledge the salesperson had, and she definitely guided me into buying the best running shoes for my weight /training. I would go back to Totalsports based just on the expert help I received, the price was a bonus, even though I always thought they were always over priced.

Nike has never appealed to me, too shmancy and technically branded to death, and to scared I end up with something that's not suited and uncomfortable. New balance breaks their shoes into 3 groups depending on your arch, neutral, pronate, and super nate, and then just choose what kind of training afaik.
But that's where the sales person come in handy !! So ask 'em!:)
 
Used running shoes ?? Yuck.

I've had 1 pair of New Balance. I always felt like I was falling out the front of them when I wore them. I prefer Nike. As far as I understand NB are a more specialized running shoe than Nike or Adidas for example.

Do you have a running shop near you? The folks that work there are great with checking what shoe will work best for you.
 
If you're a fatty-boom-boom and have wide feet, buy New Balance.

If you are a masked soup bone and have narrow feet buy Asics, Nike.

I am overweight and have narrow feet.
What should I buy. Addidas?
 
I ran my first Comrades with New Balance...they great shoes. Have tried Asics, and went back to New Balance. Happy with my current pair. Nike and the rest...I stay away from them.

Never had a problem with them, however you should rather get fitted for a shoe that is right, rather than a brand... Just because a brand has a great name and will last ages does not mean its a good shoe for you..
 
My next pair will be NB shoes. Through all the triathlons / marathons / etc. that we've done, all the guys are raving about them.

Sounds like I am better off going to a sports shop to get fitted and to get advice on what would suit my needs best.

It's true that it is too expensive to buy a pair and find out afterwards that they are not what I needed ...

exactly, i went looking for expensive shoes (equating that expensive means best for me), after some treadmill running at the shop and video footage i ended up with a R425 pair of asics...
 
NB are the best if you have wide feet. Nike doesn't cater to wide feet. I have huge feet and I wear NB. I wear NB from 2001 when I bought several pairs, but I'm on the last one and the sole finally peeled off and they just don't make them anymore like they used to. It's all lightweight now. I'm sad.

By 'wide' feet, do you mean flat feet?

Not just any sport shop. Make sure you go to a specialist running shop if you plan on doing any mileage. I've found that the people working at places like Sportsman's warehouse or Totalsports don't really know what they're talking about... and the prices are not going to be that different.
I've run with NB and Asics and can't say I prefer one over the other really. Asics is currently has the biggest market share when it comes to running shoes if that makes any difference to you. I think something like 60% of entrants to last years comrades were running on Asics

If you're anywhere near the north of joburg, there's a great shop in the Fourways Crossing shopping centre.

And if you're still looking for further advice try the Runner's world forum ... serious advice from serious runners
 
Been looking at getting some myself, I have only heard good things about them. A few friends have got them and they seem very good.
