New BB user - please help with my questions

I've got a 9300 on contract with CellC, BIS included. I cannot find answers to my questions in the forum or the manual (which was not included with the phone and which I had to download :mad:):

* How do I determine if BIS is working (activated)?
* How do I know that if I am going to use the browser (and maybe email) I am using the "free" BIS and won't get a fat bill for data usage at the end of the month?
* Can I download a Windows application from www.?????.com or an MP3 for example using "free" BIS and then afterwards transfer it to my PC using the User Tools software?
* Apparently when you turn the phone face down it goes to silent mode (I think) - can anyone confirm.
* Apparently when you slide it in, out and back into the Blackberry pouch it goes into silent mode - can anyone confirm.
* Apparently there is a setting which you have to set to prevent your phone from using a data connection when making phone calls, because when you are using a data connection it is VOIP or similar and you have a lot of break-ups and lag in the audio - can anyone assist here?
* Is a PIN message the same as BBM?

1. Look at the top right of the phone, if edge is in lowercase then no, upper case then yes. If 3G there should be blackberry logo/flag next to the 3G. Otherwise go to network status in your menus.
2. Same as above. Phone will warn about certain types of usage, streaming, large downloads etc.
3. Depends if the above restriction works on your phone. There are alternates but I will not discuss them as you will be basically abusing the service.
4. Lol no. It goes into power save normally after a few seconds.
5. Again no, same as above when you slide it in and out. Check your profile settings, there you can set notifications for in holster and out holster.
6. Dunno where you heard that. It will only utilise VOIP if you have an application to use it as such.
7. Depends on context but yeah a PIN message is generally a BBM mesage.

Yep what h said, but just be careful coz it does sometimes use data. Just set ur APN to force BIS and you won't have that problem. Welcome to the bb world ;)

In the manual under messages, it mentions "email", "PIN messages" and "Text messages" only. It tells you to compose a PIN message by using the Message Icon - Compose other - Compose PIN. I also have a BlackBerry Messenger application on my phone - what is that then?

BBM is the instant messaging application. A pin is a unique bb number, like a cell phone number.

If I am on the home screen and click the Menu (BlackBerry Logo) button and select Options, I can only see "Launch by Typing, Wallpaper Settings, Number of Icon Rows, Downloads Folder and Reset to Default Settings.

If I go the the application list and select the spanner logo (Options), I cannot find Advanced Option in the list on the menu. I can go to Device - Advanced System Settings. Is that where I need to be? Then where?

As I already said "the manual does not mention BBM" - it only explains to you how to send a PIN message using the following steps: Click Messages Icon on home screen - click the Menu key (BlackBerry Logo) - Compose Other - Compose PIN. Then you enter someone's PIN or name, if already in your contact list, type a message and click the Menu key - Send.

Is this the way you send a BBM or is this something else? Why do I have a BlackBerry Messenger application as well?

PIN is the more the term that administrators will use from a BES perspective, ie: pushing bbm like mesages to a enterprise phone. Don't stress about it.

*Edit* as to forcing BB APN, this is not neccesary on BB0S6 devices. You can force on BBOS5 but the phone should handle automatically. Otherwise check your options and browser options, there used to be an option for which route to take by default.

PIN messaging is actually pretty usesful for me as I have plenty of contacts who use blackberry phones but have elected not to use BlackBerry Messenger (BBM). BBM is a threaded chat application that you install (if it's not preinstalled) from the App world. In many cases I prefer sending a PIN message to sending a BBM as the chats are often deleted for some reason or another while PINs reside in your inbox until you remove them.

Thanks, so I just use the BlackBerry Messenger app if I want to sen a BBM?

You say that the phone will handle it automatically, is there not a way that I can make SURE that it does not use data other than BIS. I've checked the browser options and general options, but cannot find anything that refers to APN or BIS, except under Advanced System settings is a Host Routing Table. If you go in there it lists GPRS ZA (655) [65500730] and 4 more services and if you go into any one of those it displays Name, NPC, ART, APN IP/Ports and a lot of other settings, but I cannot change anything except for the IP address/port.

Its the same thing... don't stress.

Back in the day it used to be called a PIN message, before they started making apps for Blackberry. PIN messages have been around since BB started, now they just have an app to send PIN messages and have called it BBM.

If you send a PIM message to a contact from the context menu then they will receive it in BBM, its the same thing as going in to BBM and sending them a message.

Can you tell me what version OS your runnng? It should be in options, advanced somewhere.

You won't be able to set it then. 6 handles it by itself, just make sure you always check the lettering like I said in the first point. You can go into options/advanced system settings/ TCP IP and set the APN to blackberry.net and APN settings enabled checked.

Shouldn't need to though.
