Hi

I got a new Trek 820 back in around 1997. The bike back then cost +- R1700 which wasn't a too bad bike.

Now this bike was stolen over the weekend (lets just say i must not be driving down the road and see a guy on a green trek because i'll ask questions afterwards! :D ) and i need to get a quote for a new bike but I don't know what that bike would be worth now.

I went to the little bike shop i bought it from and the guy there still remembered me (use to be quite big into cycling and bought all my stuff there) and he said i should get a quote for a bike between 6k and 7k. (But the oom is very old and the shop went down the drain in the past couple of years and i don't know if i can trust his judgment.)

Is there maybe someone on here that might be able to assist to just make sure i don't screw myself or the insurance over.

Thanks

Hi, the only two shops in Somerset West you should ever consider are Williams 0218510919 and Cycle Addiction 0218518021. R6-R7K sounds right for an entry level bicycle. Just understand that the quality of certain components makes the difference between your bicycle gathering dust in the garage vs you enjoying it so much that you will look like a mud monster each and every weekend.

I would also say between R6000 and R8000 for an entry level mountain bike.

Wow

I've never know the price of bikes and at that price, I don't think I'm willing to lean ;)

You should check out Piet se Fiets in Stellenbosch. I know it sounds like a low-tech shop but the guy that runs it is very honest and a pleasure to deal with them. I got an excellent condition 2nd hand Giant OCR3 there for dirt cheap. It rides like a dream and I really enjoy it. He also worked on my Gary Fisher MTB and I do not have any reason to complain about their service.

Why are mtn bikes so expensive?

are they using some new composite/exotic materials?

No but you can get a really cheap one from Makro etc. but one rough ride in the bush and it will be finished. So rather spend a bit more and a R7000 bike will last you a few years...

The cheapest bike I've seen that I would buy is R3K but thats the bottom of the list, my dream is a Morewood and she is about R35K-R45K depending on the components. My current bicycle is insured for R10K and its rather basic even though I'm always upgrading.

not interested in a crc order cbr? I need a few things but so far its less than <R2k.

Sportsman has a nice Mongoose dualy for around R10k (which I think is a good deal)....look at that....you might as well upgrade to full-suspension...

Yep, Mongoose will give you the best specs for the price but the frames are a not as good as say Giant, however that being said in this price bracket i'd rather have a higher specced Mongoose than a lower specced Giant.

I'm currently looking at the Merida TFS-100 for just under R5K or the Scott Aspect 30 for just over. Good entry level bikes...

Don't worry to much about the brand. Have a look at a few bikes within your budget then compare the specs. Don't look at dual suspension bikes or 29ers because you'll get the worst components with a low budget. You can get a decent hardtail for around 8k.

If you not to familiar with groupsets then first do some reading then make sure you don't get a bike with the worst groupset. Because even some top brands put together some really crap bikes.

Good luck.
