So I got a new Bosch dishwasher from Takealot end of last week. I immediately noticed a strong pungent smell, however, it's somewhat chemical smelling too, and thought it was just the packaging or "newness". So I removed the packaging, and even cleaned the outside. I noticed some water in the machine and also outside of it (coming out a compartment at the bottom). However, it had rained that day and the day before, so thought it just got wet in transit. I checked the filters and it was all clean. I then ran a wash without anything in it to to see if that helped. But unfortunately it hasn't. I don't know how best to describe it, but it gets really bad when running. I had a plumber over for a geyser fix, and they said they weren't sure what the smell is either, only that it was strong. I've heard of new dishwashers having a "factory smell", so could this be it? Or is this something that shouldn't happen and I must return it? (still within 7 days)

I would contact Bosch directly to see if they can send a tech to check if that's "normal", which by what you've described, it's not. If they can't assist/advise, send it back imo.

QA test maybe with residue in the machine?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nice machine - 3:30 runtime for eco mode is a bit much but it works well. A little too quiet if anything. :)

EDIT - we went a little Bosch mad with appliances last month - new dishwasher and a new (massive) fridge. The door is so big I think it might be affecting the tides.

I've had my bosch DW for a while now, maybe 8 years? And I picked up a second hand fullsize bosch fridge , works really well. Impressed with their appliances tbh.

Did you run it on the hottest setting?

Its a new machine with warranty, call the techie out to check it. If you feel you might want to try, you can buy the below, its to wash the machine.

Can find this at checkers, pick n pay etc.

Why are you buying the same bosh appliances as I am.. first the washing machine and now the dishwasher too...

Good sale on at Builders for the dishwasher and fridge. :)

Although their delivery policy left me vexed. The fridge - which will hold at least two, maybe three, air fryer's - cost R120 to deliver - they wanted R370 to deliver the dishwasher...

From my own experience with my ex Bosch dishwasher.
At the top of the Bosch is the swing arm. Thats fed by a pipe running from the pan at the bottom where the filter is.
Then there's the drain pump, it's a white module under the filter.
Water settles in these parts.
After washing, the machine will dry out if the door is left slightly open.
If the door is closed. the machine may well develop a smell.

Our remedy was to add two or three tablespoons of bleach to litre of water, and pour that into the filter.
Start the machine, the filter water will drain first, then the machine starts its cycle. This cleans the ribbed drain pipe and drain pump first.
We would use the hot cycle.
After the machine has filled and the cycle starts, open the door and add two or three tablespoons of bleach to the water in the pan, close the door and resume the cycle.
At the end of the cycle, leave the door open to air the machine.

For what its worth - Bosch have an excellent after sales.
We had a fridge, freezer, oven and hob and the coffee machine.

They replaced our fridge door plastic shelf gratis when ours cracked. The machine was just over a year old.

My Bosch dishwasher was also ordered from Takealot.
Upon arrival it also had water in and I thought it was a 2nd hand unit.
I logged a return , stating the reason.

Got another one , also from TA , also with water inside.

Then I learned that Bosch test their machines before they dispatch it.

Yours probably stood somewhere for a period allowing the water to start smelling.

Thanks all for the suggestions and replies (except the last comment  )

I spoke to someone at the Bosch service center and they suggested I return it. They mentioned that doing a few washes should remove any smell. They also suggested (and I tend to agree) that the smell is likely coming from the special fabric that's placed above and below the main compartment. It may have gotten wet in the past, causing the chemical-like smell which gets worse when heated.

How necessary is it to fill up salt in a dishwasher? If you stay in an area that doesn't have hard water
Salt isn't necessary in areas with soft water. These days many (most?) detergents seem to have it anyway.
