New Cape Town Mayor Daniel Plato

Lets try this again, shall we? The ANC won't allow you to directly vote for mayors ergo there will be no mayoral election. Which part of this aren't you getting?
I'm way ahead of you dude. The ANC does not make laws, parliament does. Does the DA intend on having the public take part in any way shape or form in the mayoral decision?

All ANC MPs vote along party lines or they are removed from office. ANC controls 65% of Parliament, or rather the majority. The ANC NEC decides which laws to pass and do so. Ergo, the ANC is responsible for making the laws so, as such, and try to keep up, the ANC won't allow you to directly vote for mayors ergo there will be no mayoral election.

Conjecture. (or are you going to post another Mybb link?

Look, laws are made by parliament. There are various committees that decide things and cooperate on policy. It isn't just a blank sheet.

The point I was trying to put across is that if the DA seriously believes in public participation, then they should make an attempt at it when it comes to who becomes mayor, who becomes premier. It doesn't sound like they do. For example they could ask people to debate it, send in nominations etc.. Do they? I doubt it.

Why is it when we criticise(well deserved criticism) the ANC we are all racists, but when the ANC supporters insult or criticise the DA they are not racists :confused:

Love the hypocrisy in this country.

Except, and this is the tricky bit, the ANC controls Parliament. So you get where I'm going with this? Do I need to draw a picture, maybe that would help?

You do realise that Cape Town needs a mayor by Monday morning? Please lay out your time frame for all this debate and nominations, etc, etc. If there were elections the time would be available, as it stands there are no elections and there is no space to allow for public participation. This is a position that the ANC has created and, since (and hope you're understanding this now) they are the majority in Parliament, will not change.

Judging by the amount of fresh posts from the same person ALL about JZ, ALL critical in a personal fashion, it isn't criticism, it's a social media campaign!

The "colourful" mayor will just be a Zille puppet (or gardenboy),ask Saremane,he knows.

:D Hahahahah this is so funny. You're actually using Malema's little rhetoric pieces for your posts? You'd think no one could be that stupid, but there you go.

A Zille puppet, now there's something with which to scare the children.

No pleasing you, is there? There's not enough black people in the party, but the moment the DA appoints someone of colour they're just puppets.
I've seen similar things said about white members of the ANC.

I'm telling you this is Malema in disguise! I don't know who taught him to use a PC but they have a very cruel sense of humour.
Nevermind that, who taught him to read and write?

In addition Zille is in favour of voters electing their leaders directly.
What method has been proposed?

I am fully in favour of electing the president directly even though in reality the outcome, at present, would most likely be the same.

Elect the President, Mayors, MPs and MPLs directly and then perhaps we'll have a government that bows to the will of the people.

Until you start getting serious in your debates, we will not be able to stand still any more.

So you think its a bad idea or a good idea?

In the USA the President, Congressmen, Governors and Mayors are all directly elected and are directly responsible to their voters. In South Africa you do what the party (namely, the ANC) tells you and not what you electorate wishes. Its not very representative.

I dont understand how you say it is not representative, as is it not the voters that put the party in power?

With reference to your US example, the elected officials are representatives of a party. And I would ask you if you think Arnold would have been elected if he was not running on the Republican ticket? People in the US, IMO, still vote for a party, as Democrats and Republicans puts forward canidates.

In South Africa in Parliament the ANC puts forward a list of MPs and numbers 1 to x then get seats. If these MPs don't vote along party lines and do what the party tells them then they are fired and replaced by someone who will. As such you (the voter) vote to allow the ANC (for example) to place candidates of their choosing into Parliament.

However, in a constituent-elected Parliament you directly elect a candidate of your choosing (ANC, DA or Independent, for example) and they represent your needs in Parliament as an MP. They are able to disagree with their party and vote against what the ANC (for example) dictates without fear of losing their position because it is only another vote by the people in that constituency that can remove them from office.

Those who voted for the ANC may not agree 100% with all their policies depending on their socio-economic conditions. As such they would expect someone who comes from the area and know the constituents to represent their specific needs to Parliament even if it goes against party policy.

Understand the difference between the two? The constituent-elected members would have much more accountability to the actual voters than our current system does.

Just out of interest: Arnold Schwarzenegger was never a big fan of George W. Bush. He also did not necessarily do what the Republican party recommended, rather he chose to do what was in the best interests of the people of California, not necessarily the Federal Government.

ANC policies are set at grassroots level. I don't think it's very efficient, but it is done. In other countries they lobby and take polls and then modify policy and action accordingly. I doubt they even do proper polls in RSA.

Just no.
