Fortunately we were customers long before Zille or the DA got involved in anything, so it's not a choosing situation. We never chose Zille or her councilor either. Arrogance is not a virtue in public office (as you may know).

Somebody wrote an interesting letter in Beeld today. The DA won the Western Cape where 60% of the population are coloured, 20% white and 20% black. Their victory there can purely based on demographics not be repeated anywhere else in the country. Good for Cape Town, but bad for the DA's dream of getting into national government power.

COPE is now to the ANC what the MDC is to ZANU-PF in Zimbabwe. The DA may be a big tough baby, but it will never ever mature into proper oposition to the ANC. COPE however can if they play it right. The question is however, as in Zim, what will the ruling party do when the competition heats up come 2014.

Their victory there can purely based on demographics not be repeated anywhere else in the country. Good for Cape Town, but bad for the DA's dream of getting into national government power.

Well, I'm hoping the proof will be in the pudding. Hopefully the DA will perform exceptionally well in the Western Cape over the next 5 years allowing other provinces to become "jealous" of the success of the province.

If this does occur we might expect a turnaround for the Black electorate and find them voting, not along old alliance and party lines, but so they may also benefit from the better conditions created in the Western Cape.

However, I do agree that the DA needs to rigourously change its demographics before intending to take on the ANC head-to-head. Perhaps a COPE-DA merger might solve the problems of both parties?
