Google plans new Chromecast Ultra based on Android TV (w/ remote!)

According to a reliable source familiar with the company’s plans, Google is planning to launch a second-generation Chromecast Ultra this year based on Android TV. The device is a dongle, much like the current form-factor, but there is one major hardware addition: an external remote.

The device is codenamed “sabrina,” the source familiar with the device tells 9to5Google. It will support 4K HDR content, as you’d expect, and has the usual Chromecast Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity.

The external remote will control the device, and resembles a cross between the Daydream View remote and an Apple TV remote. As is to be expected, the remote has a microphone and a dedicated Google Assistant button for controlling your content with your voice. The remote will also be programmable to your TV, we’re told.

I am probably sold. It will work flawlessly compared to something like the Xiaomi Mi Box S, etc.
 
Could be a good device. The current ultra Chromecast seems to suffer from some overheating issues though.

Google’s ‘Sabrina’ Android TV dongle appears at major retailers suggesting $49-$59 price

Back in March of this year, we reported that Google was preparing to launch its own Android TV dongle. In the time since, along with the world going upside down, a handful of leaks have revealed more about the product. Today, we’ve obtained information that suggests the price of Google’s first Android TV dongle, “Sabrina.”

According to Home Depot’s internal systems, Google’s “Sabrina” Android TV dongle is going to have a price much more affordable than anyone expected. Currently, the product is listed at just $49.99, well below the cost of the current Chromecast Ultra and just $15 above the third-gen Chromecast. It also directly matches the price of both the Roku Streaming Stick+ and the Amazon Fire TV Stick.

We also found a since deleted listing for “Sabrina” on Home Depot’s website, still held within Google Cache.

Beyond the price of “Sabrina,” we can also see that Google is planning to release three different colors of its Android TV dongle. “Rock Candy” and “Como Blue” imply that “Chalk” and “Sky” colors from Nest Mini could make their way over to this product. “Summer Melon,” on the other hand, implies some shade of pink that we’ve actually seen in some previously leaked marketing materials.


Update: After we first broke this story, two more retail listings have been uncovered. The folks over at Droid-Life spotted the product at Walmart for $59 and Artem Russakovskii from Android Police has since also confirmed Target has that same $60 price point listed internally. Interestingly, too, that listing comes with a September 30th release date.


It’s expected that “Sabrina” will make its debut alongside the Pixel 5, 4a 5G, and new Nest Speaker at an upcoming Made by Google event. The product is also expected to launch a new version of Android TV known as “Google TV” which has a redesigned UI including YouTube TV and Nest integration. It’s also expected to offer a programmable button on its included remote.

If you have teh budget then the Nvidia Shield TV Pro is the ultimate Android TV box. If you don't have that sort of money then the Ematic TV box is a good choice.

The retailer has the new streaming device up for sale for $49.99, two days before its launch

Google’s Pixel 5 event is scheduled for this Wednesday, but some of the company’s other new gadgets are already appearing on store shelves. That includes its all-new Chromecast, which some savvy buyers have been able to purchase directly in-store from retailers like Walmart and The Home Depot over the course of the last week.

The Verge has purchased one such device from The Home Depot and can confirm the retailer is not stopping customers from checking out and taking the pre-release product home.

Not all stores appear to be selling the item; we tried two and only found the new Chromecast at a second location. And inputting the universal product code listed on the receipt into the retailer’s website returns no results, so it would appear you can only purchase it early in person.

The receipt doesn’t even say Chromecast on it; it just lists the device as “SABRINA-ABBEY ROCK CANDY,” which is the hardware’s codename (and another clue that the Chromecast is being sold ahead of schedule). Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
