From The Times:

The police unit that is replacing the Scorpions will be launched officially today.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations will be unveiled by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa and its head, Anwa Dramat, in Midrand this morning.

Consisting of former members of the Scorpions, police crime intelligence officers and others from the South African Revenue Services fraud unit, the new 800-member body has big shoes to fill.

THE police super unit that replaces the Scorpions now has a new name – the Hawks.

Formerly called the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation, the unit was launched by police minister Nathi Mthethwa and Hawks boss Anwa Dramat at Gallagher Estate in Midrand this morning.

The 800-member Hawks consist of former Scorpions investigators, police officers from the crime intelligence unit as well as officers from the South African Revenue Services’ fraud department.

Wow - did they come up with that all on their own? Epic. Bravo. 1000internets to whoever came up with that corker.

Or did they have to hire 'consultants'?

Scorpions are able to sting most animals that happen to "cross the line" as far as I'm aware but Hawks don't hunt pigs at the trough, do they? I'm sure they tend to go for smaller prey.

The Hawks doesn't sound particularly scarier than The Scorpions.
Anyways. It's true that a scorpion can sting any mother****er but that a hawk can't eat a bear. But a scorpion can sting the **** out of a bear. And a police commissioner...

Why didn't they just call the unit The Goldfish or The Chipanzees. Or The Stormers. All pretty damn useless. Would fit the unit like a glove.

Well put...

What bothers me is they mentioned nothing (from what I read/heard) about fighting corruption and political crime.

I really wish they'd stop trying to come up with names like the "Scorpions", or "Hakws" . It's purile, juvenile, and it makes it all the harder to take them seriously.
